A logo is a graphical symbol that represents a thing or idea. The word was originally an abbreviation for "logotype" but is now the generally accepted form of the term.

(In printing a logotype is a piece of type that carries more than one symbol to make a design).

Logos used for general purposes include:

  • the three-bladed radiation symbol
  • the six-horned biohazard symbol
  • the 'i' symbol for information points
  • the 'man' and 'woman' symbols used to denote toilets

Many logos represent corporations or their product brands. These logos are generally trademarks.

Famous commercial logos include:

  • the Coca Cola name written in its distinctive curving lettering
  • the Nike 'Swoosh'
