Saphira is the blue dragon of Eragon the Dragon Rider in Christopher Paolini's Inheritance trilogy. Since Eragon is the Rider associated with her, they are telepathically linked. She acts as Eragons conciousness, and is younger in years, but older in wisdom. She can block Eragon out of her mind if she wishes it, but generally doesn't. Her claws are said to be as lethal as any sword, and her tail serves as a mace. She breathes blue flames and, like all Dragons, is constantly growing. When she first see's Glaedr, she is convinced that he will be her mate, but is mistaken. She has extensive training with aerial comat and Dragon fights, as she trained with Glaedr, and is full of wisdom. She has sapphire colored scales and eyes, and loves the Hadarc Desert. She is also the the last female Dragon left in Alagaesia, and therfore she is the only one who can re populate the Dragon race. She is also sometimes known as Brightscales. She hatched for Eragon when she wouldn't for anyone elsse, which shows she has an extremly high opinion of him. Her appearence started everything, as because of her the Ra'zac came. She has saved Eragon's life on many accounts, and has assisted him an battle by lending strength to him and fighting alongside him or with him on her back. She has been there all throughout Eragon's journey and is closer to him than anyone else, even his own family.

Paolini stated that her name is derived from 'sapphire', the blue-jewel. She also may be named after a Biblical character referenced in Acts 5:1 -- "But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession."
