Creobroter gemmatus, a Flower Mantis

The insect Order Mantodea consists of approximately 2,000 species[1], of which a majority are in the Family Mantidae

Until recently, only this single family was recognized within the order, and the term "mantid" was therefore historically used for any member of the order. Taxonomically, however, the term now properly refers only to this one family, meaning the species in the other eight recently-established families are not mantids, by definition (i.e., they are empusids, hymenopodids, etc.), and the term "mantises" (or the more colloquial praying mantises) should be used when referring to the entire order.

Note that in some cases, common names in the English language are loosely applied to several different members of a particular genus. For example, "Giant Asian Mantis" is used for various members of Hierodula, "Dead Leaf Mantis" may refer to various species of Deroplatys (and to species of other genus as well), etc.

The following lists is incomplete. The "Tree of Life Project" [2] is the primary reference for the taxonomy shown here. For citation of common nomenclature, see individual articles. For additional references, see individual articles.
