Catholic Memorial School is an all-boys college preparatory school (grades 7-12) located in West Roxbury, Massachusetts. It is located in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston.

History

Catholic Memorial opened its doors on September 9, 1957, with 225 students and five Christian Brothers of Ireland in the former St. Theresa of Avila Parish School building. This building was donated to the Christian Brothers by Monsignor Charles A. Donahue, V.F., LL.D. who was the Pastor of St. Theresa's at that time. The school was named "Catholic Memorial" at the suggestion of His Eminence Richard Cardinal Cushing to commemorate the sesquicentennial of the Archdiocese of Boston, as a memorial to all the Catholics who gave so much of themselves in the establishment of educational institutions in the Boston area.

Brother Joseph G. McKenna was the first headmaster of Catholic Memorial. He guided the school to the opening of its new building, which was dedicated by Cardinal Cushing on November 10, 1959. Three years later the classroom wing was opened, and the school enrollment increased to 1,110 students. The Middle School program, which opened its doors in September 1993 with 185 students in grades 7 and 8, was the vision of Brother E. John Sheehan.

In addition to Catholic Memorial, the Christian Brothers staff another school in New England, Bishop Hendricken High School in Warwick, Rhode Island. The worldwide congregation has two provinces in the United States. In addition to Catholic Memorial and Bishop Hendricken, the Christian Brothers of the Eastern American Province operate educational institutions in New York (where they started in the U.S. in 1906), New Jersey, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Arizona, Washington, California and Hawaii. They also support missionary efforts in Peru. Altogether, nearly 400 Christian Brothers run 37 schools in the United States and Canada.

Worldwide, the Congregation of Christian Brothers has about 1,300 members.[1] The religious order was founded in Ireland by Blessed Edmund Rice, a prominent businessman who started his schools for the poor and neglected boys of Waterford. Committed to the vows of celibacy, poverty and obedience, the Brothers follow a tradition of excellence and Christian witness which is embodied in the students and alumni of Catholic Memorial.

Catholic Memorial is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In addition, Catholic Memorial is affiliated with the following educational organizations:

Mission

Catholic Memorial is an academic faith community for young men in grades 7-12. We endeavor to instill in our students a mature commitment to the demands of Catholic Christian witness and a life-long love of learning.

Catholic Memorial serves a range of socioeconomic backgrounds and academic abilities. We embrace the diversity of the neighborhoods and surrounding towns of Boston by providing young men with a challenging college preparatory experience rooted in Gospel values. We want our students to explore their own academic, athletic, creative, and spiritual potential as educated gentlemen and citizens. And we want their faith and ideals to find expression in service to God, neighbor, and the Church.

With a dedicated faculty, staff, and supportive parents we create within our program an ethic of caring for the needs of each student. In keeping with the tradition of Blessed Edmund Ignatius Rice and the Congregation of Christian Brothers, we foster a passion for social justice and respect for the dignity of those treated least, lost, and last.

CM Today

Catholic Memorial is a private college preparatory school for young men in grades seven through twelve. The challenging curriculum is enhanced by a variety of competitive athletic teams and co-curricular activities. CM students learn and grow in a close-knit community that values Christian teachings and encourages the development of the whole student — mind, body and spirit.

CM offers a host of clubs and activities that are designed to give students the chance to explore new pastimes, share common interests and develop the social skills that will help them in college and beyond. From student government and the forensics team to art and music clubs, there's an out-of-the-classroom opportunity for every CM student to grow as a contributing member of the community.

The Arts program at Catholic Memorial has expanded in recent years and now includes Advanced Placement art and music courses and several clubs (jazz, choir, literary magazine, art, drama, television broadcasting, speech/debate). The Forensics Team sent over a dozen students to Appleton, Wisconsin in 2008 to compete against top forensics talent nationwide in the Catholic National Forensics Grand Tournament.

CM is known in the Boston community for the service students do. Two campus ministers help students find service opportunities that will build in them the desire to help their community. The Senior Service program begins in March each year, with seniors taking one day out of each week to work on site at inner-city grammar schools, hospitals, non-profit agencies, clothing distribution centers, food pantries, soup kitchens, etc. Volunteers from all grades also visit the Casserly House in Roslindale each week to tutor at-risk children and the Golda Meir House in West Roxbury to help the elderly. Each year, CM students send large delegations to the Walk for Hunger and the Making Strides against Breast Cancer Walk, among other annual events.

Tuition for the 2008-2009 school year is $12,175. Scholarships are awarded upon admission to Catholic Memorial High School and Middle School. The CM admissions committee selects students for scholarship eligibility based upon their past academic performance and the results of the entrance exams. No applications are available for CM scholarships; instead, every application for admission is reviewed for scholarship potential. Financial aid is available for qualifying CM families.

Athletics

Catholic Memorial are known as the Knights. They are a member of the Catholic Conference, the most competitive sports conference in New England, and perhaps, the nation. The other teams in the Catholic Conference are the Boston College High School Eagles, the Malden Catholic Lancers, the St. John's Preparatory School Eagles, and the Xaverian Brothers High School Hawks.

Catholic Memorial is one of the top high school ice hockey team competing in the MIAA, with Boston College High School being their bitter rival (they are the only two teams to win multiple Super Eight tournaments (CM has 12 while BC High has 4) and they often meet each other in the championship match).

Catholic Memorial has won twelve of eighteen Super Eight tournaments, which pits the best eight Division 1 teams in the state against each other in a round-robin tournament to determine the Division 1A Massachusetts state champion. Catholic Memorial has consistently been ranked number one in Massachusetts boys ice hockey by the Boston Globe. Catholic Memorial has also been nationally ranked as the number one team a number of times, with the most recent dating this year in 2008.

Catholic Memorial is also recognized for their success from their wrestling program, with individual sectional, state, all-state, and New England Champions, such as Mike Abell, Karl Danso, Matt Fay, and Craig Carpenter. Carpenter currently holds the school record for most wins.

In the winter of 2008 the Catholic Memorial Basketball team captured the MIAA Division II State Basketball Championship over Tantasqua Regional High School at the DCU Center in Worcester, Massachusetts.

In the spring of 2008 the Catholic Memorial Rugby team captured its first ever New England Division II Championship by defeating Brookline High School 17-10 in the final.
