History

The daughter of William and Annette Birkin, Sherry was born around 1985 or 1986, sometime after her parents were married. Sherry's parents were both scientists working for the Umbrella Corporation's Arklay Laboratory, where they secretly developed biological weapons. Due to their busy work schelude (her father was one of the lead researchers), Sherry's parents were not around as she grew up.

In 1995, Dr. Birkin and his wife were transferred to a newly-constructed underground laboratory in Raccoon City to work on a new biological weapon called the G-Virus. However, in 1998, William turned renegade after completing the G-Virus and refused to hand his work to Umbrella. Umbrella Special Forces Unit was sent in to retrieve the G-Virus and assasinate William. However, during the struggle, William injected himself with the G-Virus and a vial contained the T-Virus broke and was spread over the city.

With Raccoon City infected with zombies, Sherry was told by her to seek refuge in the Raccoon Police Department Precint. There, she met with another survivor, Claire Redfield, who was in search of her missing brother. With the precint itself now infected with all sorts of mutants and creatures, Sherry sought Claire's protection and the two began to look for a way out of the city.

However, as they made their escape, the two were pursued by one of Umbrella's Tyrants sent to retrieve a hidden G-Virus sample within Sherry's pendant (put there by her mother), as well Sherry's own father, now a monster transformed by the G-Virus. The two eventually made found themselves in Umbrella's secret underground lab.

When Claire was separated from Sherry at one point, Claire met with Sherry's mother, Annette. With Sherry in danger, Claire turned to Annette for help. Although, Claire eventually saved Sherry, Annette did not survive.

After finding an escape train with lab, Claire and Sherry managed to leave the lab along with police officer Leon S. Kennedy. However, the three were chased by the mutated Birkin. This caused the train to initiate an anti-biohazard self-destruct mechanism. With Leon and Claire distracting Birkin, Sherry managed to pull the train's emergency brake, allowing them to get far away from the train and leave Birkin to die in the explosion.

After escaping Raccoon City, Leon told Claire to continue her search for Chris without him and Sherry, feeling that they were merely a load for Claire to carry. Claire promised to come back someday and see Sherry again. Leon and Sherry were later picked-up by official authorities and Sherry was giving to the government custody. She awaits to see Claire again someday, wearing the red vest she got from her as a reminder.

Role in the games

Sherry appears primarily in Claire's scenario as Claire's supporting character. During certain portions of the game, the player will take control of Sherry. Sherry is the only character in the entire that cannot use a weapon due to the fact that she's only a child. As a result, she cannot defend herself from enemies and is slower than the other characters (although she can crawl into places Claire cannot). Her voice was provided by actress Lisa Yamanaka.

Sherry's predicament changes based on the order the player chooses their character. In the Claire A scenario, she is impregnated by a G-embryo implanted to her by her father. This leads to Claire having to procure an antidote from Annette to prevent the fertilization of the embryo. Later in the subsequent Leon B scenario, Leon has to carry an unconscious Sherry to the train while Claire is preparing the antidote.

In the Claire B scenario, Sherry never gets impregnated by Birkin. Instead, she is chased thorough the game by the Tyrant (or "Mr. X") as he tries to acquire the G-Virus sample inside Sherry's pendant (the Tyrant never goes after Sherry in the Claire A scenario due to Sherry losing her pendant to Ada earlier). She also bears witness to her mother's death after Annette is struct by fallen debris.

Sherry also appears in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis in one of the game's epilogue files, covering Sherry's fate after the outcome of Resident Evil 2.
