San Rafael Elementary School is located in the San Rafael Hills of Pasadena, California. Like most Pasadena Unified School District schools, San Rafael has a low attendance of the neighborhood, with a significant number of parents opting for private education. Because of the low turnout, its pupils are mostly Hispanic and black and originate from Northeast Pasadena. Consequently, the demographics of the school drive the Academic Performance Index scores lower and creates a positive feedback loop, exacerbating the enrollment of the local neighborhood. A number of times the school has been slated for closure due to the low turnout and low test scores.

Trivia

  • The school displays a Victorian design that has been pictured in several movies including Liar, Liar and Bruce Almighty.
