The British impressed many american sailors during the late 1790's and the early 1800's. Conditions in the British Royal Navy were very bad, not to mention the fact that the pay was not very much. So the British decided to leave the Royal Navy and become American Merchants because they pay was outstanding and the conditions were alot better. So then the British started stopping american merchants and looking for British deserters. Since there was no difference in physical or mental things. The british took ahold of over 6000 american sailors during the early 1800's.
