Streptogramin
Appearance
Streptogramins are a class of antibiotics. They are a combination of Quinupristin and dalfopristin in a 30:70 ratio. Streptogramins are bacteriocidal. This class of antibiotics inhibit protein synthesis in a synergestic manner. Quinupristin binds to the 50s ribosomal subunit and prevents elongation of the polypeptide. Dalfopristin binds to a nearby site, changes the conformation of the 50s ribosomal subunit, enhancing the binding of Quinupristin. Streptogramins are effective in the treatment of Methicilin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancoumycin resistant enterococci (VRE)
Members include:
- Pristinamycin (Virginiamycin)
- Quinupristin/dalfopristin, a derivative of Pristinamycin, marketed as Synercid
