Jackass: The Movie directed by Jeff Tremaine was released on October 25, 2002, with the tagline "Do not attempt this at home." It is a continuation of the stunts and pranks by the various characters of the MTV television series Jackass, and the film was produced by Paramount Pictures and MTV Films.
Plot: Stunt by stunt
Introduction
After introducing the warnings and seeing Chris Pontius in a spaceman suit, we see the whole gang in a giant shopping trolley going down a bridge. They all get showered with bricks, and, after introducing everyone and getting rid of Ehren, Dave and Preston, the rest of them go flying into a giant fruit and cart stall.
Rent-a-car-crash-up-derby
Johnny Knoxville dresses up very shadily in a long coat, goes into a car shop and rents out a nice, clean, white car. He spray paints racing numbers on it before taking it to a garage and the guys there take out everything except the shell of the car, one seat and the engine. He then has a smash-up-derby with a load of pros, and the car gets completely wrecked; one of the other cars goes through the windscreen with the wheel very close to his head! They then take the car back to the shop and try to get away without paying for all the damages that they caused. There are good quotations throughout, for example, ‘I hit a dog’, ‘I completely black out when I drink’ and ‘That's just paper work (sounding drunk)’. (The first time that Johnny almost killed himself was whilst filming Jackass: The Movie.)
Spoiler: Although the reactions of the clerks in the movie are genuine, because they're not in on the gag, in fact MTV always got permission in advance from the managers or owners of the company.
The Muscle Stimulator
Chris Pontius, Johnny, Dave and Ehren use muscle stimulators in very weird places in the body: anywhere apart from where it should be. Initially, Ehren uses them on his chest, then Dave puts them on his hands, then Dave puts one on his gooch, and lastly Dimitri Elyashkevich puts them on his testicles.
Fatty Fall Down
Preston Lacy (complete with food) sits down on a bench. Just as someone walks by, the bench breaks and Preston goes smashing into the ground and his pants rip wide open, much to the amazement of the passer-by.
Golf Car Antics
The crew dress up as stereotypical English golfers, get loads of golf carts and trash a mini-golf course. They then take the animals from the mini-golf onto the larger golf course and start doing jumps over them into the bunkers, with the golf carts. (The second time Johnny almost killed himself, when Ryan turned the cart turned over and Johnny got another bump on the head.)
Party-Boy Japan
Chris Pontius dresses in his party boy clothes and goes into a shop. He tests the Japanese stereos, and as they play he starts stripping down to his g-string. He then does an exotic dance for the store clerk, who calls a Japanese Police Officer; Chris then steals the officer's hat and continues to dance.
Alligator Tightrope
Steve-O and the crew go to a zoo and set up a tightrope over the alligator pool. Steve-O decides to walk over it wearing only a jockstrap and a helmet. He soon finds that he can't walk on a tightrope and falls off into the pool of alligators; instead of giving up, Chris hangs a steak from Steve-O’s ass to entice the alligators into biting it. One does, and Steve-O runs so fast that he collides with another alligator.
Fireworks Wakeup
Bam (wearing some haggard gear) goes into his parent’s room at a very early hour of the morning, and sets off a large number of fireworks in a trash can to wake them all up. Then later, as Phil goes to work Bam lets off some more fireworks in his van, and shoots a gun loaded with confetti at the van as well; Phil almost has a heart attack.
The Shoplifter
After seeing Bam, Johnny and Spike getting dressed up as old people, we see Johnny going into a shop, putting things into his coat and trying to walk out of the shop. The shopkeeper starts taking things out of his coat, so Johnny takes more until the shopkeeper kicks him out. As he leaves, he attempts to steal the stand outside the shop, and the shopkeeper becomes really angry.
Hardware Store Crap
Dave England delays defecation for a day then prepares to go into a shop to defecate in a display toilet. But on the way he ends up defecating in his pants. The smell of Dave's feces became so unbearable that everyone exited the car and cameraman Lance throws up and films himself doing so. On another day(apparently a week later according to Knoxville when he, Jeff Tremaine and Dimitri Elyashkevich recorded an audio commentary for this film), Dave does the same again and this time actually defecated into a toilet on floor display. The clerk looks very shocked.
This is an example of how Irell & Manella had to edit the film for legal reasons. They made sure that in the film shown in the theater, it never looked like Dave's genitals were shown to any customers in the store because that could be considered "indecent exposure." (It doesn't matter if genitals are shown to people watching the movie; in the Whale Shark Gummer sketch, Steve-O's penis is clearly visible.)
Clipper Cam
Dimitri films himself going up behind random people and clipping their hair. He gets Bam, Benzo, Matt Hoffman, and Johnny.
Mousetraps
Ehran McGhehey dresses up as a mouse and throws himself into hundreds of set mousetraps, then Johnny throws one and it lands on his crotch.
Bungee Wedgie
Chris Rabb puts on a large pair of pants on bungee ropes and jumps off a tree. The first time, the bungee rope breaks and he goes crashing to the ground. He tries it again and hangs there for ages. The wedgie bloodens his pants.
Riot Control Test
Johnny Knoxville goes to the valley to get shot with a beanbag rifle projectile. Then he shows how it looks 2 days later, the bruise covering nearly the whole of his stomach.
This is another time Johnny was nearly killed. The first shot (edited out) was when the "expert" shooting the rifle completely missed. The beanbag would be lethal if it hit him in the chest, if it hadn't been protected, or the face, which was not protected. The reason it was edited out (and the reason that the movie never says where any of the stunts took place) is that while the "Jackass" crew could waive civil liability and hence they could not waive criminal liability. Technically speaking, if a local prosecutor wanted to win points by going after "immorality," they could have charged the rifleman with attempted murder and all of the Jackass crew with conspiracy. The Los Angeles law firm Irell & Manella was responsible for cutting out legally dubious bits. Here, they edited the scene to make it look like there was no risk of death, just a lot of pain. They cut out the first miss, as well as a hysterically funny reaction shot from Johnny while he's waiting for the second shot.
Johnny Knoxville was really irritated about this edit. He actually called up and yelled at one of the Irell partners trying to get this in (they didn't). And when they were doing the DVD commentary, he said something to the effect of "You won't believe what our lawyers made us take out..." and of course the lawyers had to cut out that part of the commentary too.
The Big Cone
Wee-man gets into a big orange cone and walks around on the streets of Japan. He stops at the exit of an escalator, causing trouble for people who are getting off the escalator.
Ass Kicked by Girl
Ryan becomes the victim of a brief kickboxing match with a female Japanese professional kick boxer, Kumagai Naoka.
Tropical Pole Vaulting
Steve-O pole vaults over palm trees, tables, and volleyball nets. Finally, he jumps off a bridge into the sea.
Night Pandas
Loads of the crew dress up in panda suits and run all over Japan skating, jumping through and over things, attacking each other, drinking booze, eating bamboo, and going up to random Japanese people.
Rocket Skates
Johnny Knoxville goes to England to skate down hills. Already hard enough, he makes it harder by putting bottle rockets on the back of them. He does this three times, the last time putting twice as many in the back.
Roller Disco Truck
Bam, Steve-O, Chris P, Johnny and Ryan all dress up in 70’s gear and go roller skating in the back of a truck. Preston starts the truck up and drives around corners so every one falls over.
Wasabi Snooters
Steve-O is at a sushi resturant, gets lots of wasabi and snorts all of it before vomiting over his plate of sushi. This is the first time, out of many, Steve-O vomits in this movie.
The Gong
Rick Kossic goes around in a sumo diaper carrying a gong, and Johnny Knoxville hits the gong in front of random people. One time, Rick lifts the gong a bit high and Johnny hits him in the nuts, and Chris P takes his diaper.
April Says Fuck
Since they no longer had to bleep cuss words, Bam promises that he will get April to say fuck. Bam and Jess put a sedated alligator into April’s kitchen. When she comes home, she sees it and starts screaming "Is it real, is it real?!" and then she says "That’s the scariest fucking thing I ever saw."
The Handrail
Clyde Singleton and Eric Koston teach Johnny Knoxville how to 50-50 grind a very long rail. Johnny almost makes it but falls off right at the end.
Jacuzzi
Preston Lacy sits in a hot tub on a porch (outside his house?) wearing only his underwear, while he drinks a beer. He gets out of the hot tub and his butt crack is clearly visible. He walks inside the house while we see ducks walking around on the porch.
Paper Cuts
Johnny gets Ryan to give him paper cuts between the webbings of his fingers and his toes. Lance vomits because he ate pepperoni pizza and he’s a vegetarian. Then Steve-O does a paper cut on the corner of his mouth.
The Fortune Teller
Chris Pontius is in the streets of Japan wearing his party boy uniform and carrying a boom box. He meets a fortune teller on the streets. As the fortune teller is about to tell Chris Pontius his fortune, Pontius replies "Wait a minute. I know what my fortune is. It's partying!". He plays the party boy theme and dances around the fortune teller. The fortune teller is annoyed and walks away.
Sweaty Fat Fucks
Bam and his two friends, Matt Hoffman and Tony Hawk, dress up in large clothes and start skating (and falling) around a skate park, getting hurt and snapping boards, one of them getting a concussion. "Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix-A-Lot
Department Store Boxing
Johnny Knoxville has a boxing match with Butterbean, knocks Johnny out and hits his head on the corner of a shop display unit. He falls unconscious and snores, so they take him to the hospital. (The fourth time that Johnny almost kills himself.)
Whale Shark Gummer
Chris Pontius and Steve-O put shrimps in netting trousers whilst wearing them. They go into the ocean and 30” whale sharks eat the shrimps from their crotches.
Tidal Wave
Johnny Knoxville goes to Mexico and gets swept away by a large amount of water.
Off Road Tattoo
Jeff Tremaine tries to give Steve-O a smile face tattoo while riding in a Humvee 4WD truck on a BMX track. By the end of it, instead of a smile tattoo he had more holes in him than Swiss cheese! Former Black Flag frontman Henry Rollins drives the car and Ryan was there for moral support. (He was the original talent for this piece but he trades one with Steve-O for the butt X-ray.)
Ass Rockets
Steve-O and Chris Pontius want to warm themselves up by lighting fireworks off various parts of their bodies: Steve-O’s buttocks, Chris’ penis, then both at once. The last one almost hits Loomis in the face.
BMX Tug-of-War
Ryan Dunn rides his BMX and tries to pull Preston off a settee, Preston gets hurt falling off the settee and Ryan lands his bike in a pile of cacti.
Yellow Snow Cone
Ehren gets snow in a paper cone, packs it in, pees over it, then eats it. Then he gets sick. There is a brief, choppy scene with Dave England kicking him. And then he vomits a huge pile of vomit in the snow, including the yellow snowcone that he had just eaten.
Golf Course Airhorn
Dave, Ehren and Johnny hide in some bushes on a golf course. Every time someone tries tee off they blow the air horn to put them off. One guy got so mad that he threw his golf club at them; another one hits a ball in their direction.
The Burglars
Johnny and Bam dress all in black (to imitate burglars) and get a bag of fake diamonds. They drop in from the roof of a shop, and a man working there looks at them and runs out of the door - they had to try to stop him phoning the police, because he thought it was real.
Butt X-ray
(Ryan Dunn traded this one with Steve-O, as Steve-O’s father said he would disown him.) Ryan gets a little blue (Ryan's favorite colour) toy car, puts it in a condom, and then inserts it into his rectum. He then goes to a doctor who takes an X-ray. The car shows up clearly and gives the doctor something to think about.
Yet another edit for legal reasons. The lawyers had to make sure that it was ambiguous who put the car in Ryan's butt. In some states, it might be considered sodomy if someone else put the car in his butt. It wouldn't have been a crime to put the car in his own butt.
End Credits
Johnny Knoxville catapults into a pond. Rip Taylor is sitting in a boat in the pond and announces that "this is the end".
Afterwards, the movie credits roll by. The credits are superimposed on videos of brief skits which did not show up in the movie.
Son of Jackass
The guys all dress up as old people and stumble around a place that looks like a building site. They then blow everyone up. Starting with Ehren, then Ryan, then Dave, then Bam, then Wee Man. Preston gets run over by a truck, and Chris Pontius gets eaten by a tiger. Then, just when Johnny and Steve-O thought that they were safe, Johnny is flattened by a large shed, leaving only Steve-O to say: "Yeah Dude".
The Japanese Version
Since some scenes of the movie were shot in Japan, a special edited version was made and screened for the Japanese audience. Some bits were edited out due to legal reasons, especially cuts showing people's faces without their consent. However they were placed back in for the special DVD version.
