The Australian Ballet Company was founded in 1962. As well as being a prestigious touring ballet company (with established and lengthy seasons in Melbourne, where it is based, and Sydney), the Australian Ballet also runs a high school focusing almost solely on classical ballet. The company runs approximately 200 performances a year and is one of the busiest Ballet companies in the world. The company is very diverse in its range of performances; it continues to perform classic pieces as well as contemporary pieces.

The Ballet's current Artistic Director is David McAllister, who was a Principal Dancer until being appointed in 2001 after Ross Stretton left for the Royal Ballet in the UK. The Australian Ballet has always had a strong link with the English ballet tradition.

It is funded by the Australian Federal Government and various States and Territories. It also receives funding from Telstra as a corporate sponsor.
