Alta Mira is a 48 unit treatment facility in Sausalito, California. The facility is made up of 8 individual homes and 1 main meeting area, which was previously the famous Alta Mira Hotel. The facility treats individuals struggling with both addiction and mental health. Alta Mira uses therapeutic methods like meditation, nutritional therapy, adventure therapy, Toltec wisdom, and movement therapy for healing treatment.[1]

History

Alta Mira was originally the private home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Jackson in 1880, but in 1895 their home was transformed into a hotel. In 1926 the hotel burned down in a devastating fire, but it was later rebuilt as a Spanish-style villa.[2] The hotel quickly became a popular destination. William Wachter purchased the hotel in 1954 and enlarged several of the main rooms which in turn made it a favorite location for weddings and receptions. In 2003 Michael Blatt bought the property and renovated it into a 23-room bed and breakfast. Then finally in 2007 Michael Blatt and his son transformed the facility into a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center.[3] Authors Sterling Hayden, Jack London and Charles Nordhoff resided in a few of the cottages used by the treatment facility while writing their books.

Individuals who are dually diagnosed suffer from both an addiction problem as well as a mental health disorders.[4] Nearly 14 million Americans suffer from co-occuring disorders. [5]
