Orannis is a character from Garth Nix's Abhorsen.

The Beginning

Template:Spoiler Orannis was once the Ninth Bright Shiner, who sought to destroy the work of the Seven. He would have triumphed, only he was bound by the Seven into two silver hemispheres and buried deep beneath the earth. One small shard broke off, however and was eventually retrieved by Chlorr of the Mask.

The Reawakening

Orannis used his shard to infect young Ancelstierrian Nicholas Sayre, who then became his avatar. In order for the Ninth Shiner to be released, the hemispheres must be joined by a powerful stroke of lightning. Therefore, a lightning farm was built near the border and the hemispheres were transported.

The Rebinding

The hemispheres rejoined and Orannis began to show his destructive powers. However, another seven came, led by Lirael, the new Abhorsen in Waiting and attempted to rebind him. They initially failed, until another joined them. It was Mogget, once Yrael, the Eighth Shiner, who added his voice to the binding bells. Orannis was bound anew by Lirael and the Eight.
