The Campeonato Ecuatoriano de Fútbol Primera A 2008 (known as Copa Pílsener Primera A 2008 for sponsorship reasons) is the 50th season of the Ecuadorian Primera A, Ecuador's premier football league. The First Stage began on 10 February 2008, the Second Stage will begin on 20 July 2008, and the Liguilla Final beginning on 19 October 2008.
Tournament Format
The format for 2008 is new, but is similar to the Primera A 2007 edition. The tournament is composed of three stages:
First Stage (Spanish: Primera Etapa)
The 12 teams will compete each against other in a double round-robin format (one home game, one away game). The top four teams will qualify directly to the Liguilla Final, with the first-place finisher qualifying for the last Ecuadorian spot in the Copa Sudamericana 2008. The top three teams will receive free points for the Liguilla Final (3, 2, & 1 point[s] respectively)
Second Stage (Spanish: Segunda Etapa)
The 12 teams will be divided into 2 groups of 6 teams, and then play within the group in a double round-robin tournament. The winner of the each group advances to the final two spots in the Liguilla Final. If the teams who have already qualified for the Liguilla Final manage to qualify again by winning their group, the last spots for the Liguilla Final go to the highest positioned team in the Aggregate Table who has not qualified. The top team of each group will receive one free point for the Liguilla Final. At the end of this stage, the two lowest teams on the aggregate table become relegated to Primera B.
Liguilla Final
The Liguilla Final is a double round-robin format between the six qualified teams of the 1st and Group Stage Winners. The winner of this stage will be the champion of the Copa Pílsener Primera A. The champion will qualify to the Copa Libertadores 2009 Group Stage, while the runner-up and third-place finisher to the Preliminary Round (this slight change from other years is due to the fact that the defending Copa Libertadores champion is an Ecuadorian team).
Participating Teams
The teams for Primera A 2008 include the top nine finishers of 2007, plus the top three finishers from Primera B 2007 (marked with an asterisk). The teams for 2008 are (home city in parenthesis)[1]:
