Request: SVG ification. Arrange. Wheat, star, moon, shield, plume in coat of arms. Animal is wolf.--Lord Leatherface (talk) 20:53, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion: This request is already on this page. --SelfQ (talk) 21:19, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That request appears to have disappeared (Probably as "stale"). 68.39.174.238 (talk) 17:30, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have been looking for a very long time for another version of this image. it would seem that there is none. The shiled itself is an easy part to do, the only main problem ( and the reason why it has not been done) is becouse of the seal bellow the shield and the wheat/feathers arround it. they are no clear enough nor there is a clear text (that i can read) in wich it describes what it should contain. so there is no way to realistically retrace it as svg -LadyofHats (talk) 11:20, 23 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Could someone do the shield, at least (Since that seems easy), so when a better resolution image turns up, the rest can be done fairly easily? 68.39.174.238 (talk) 01:14, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There's the shield. The rest is definitely not discernible. --pbroks13talk? 06:26, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion: I actually like the "antique-ness" to that image. You really think it should be vectorized? --pbroks13talk? 22:53, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Make. SVG ification. Make big(Caucasian Imamate) Please.
Wow. Anyone who does this is a hero. I took one look and wilted. --Slashme (talk) 12:31, 16 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If it is vectorized, this image shouldn't be VVA'd, since the scanned text contains some details that can't really be vectorized (Ink, etc.). 68.39.174.238 (talk) 22:50, 16 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I’ll have a go, but don't be surprised if it never gets finished. By the way, there is a cleaner, albeit black and white, image here:

If it was vectorised, how complete would it be? i.e., should the image want to just be the eagle, CoAs and crucifix in the middle. I could for see this cleaner version used alongside the original as a sort of 'key', to show what states are shown. This would be more useful than including the comets, parchment around the legs ect. On a similar topic, should the names above the shields be kept, and if so should they be in the original, I assume Old High German, language, or in English, Or maybe if it were to be used for reference, using numbers to relate to a key in the text, as the trend seems to be. Any comments would be appreciated.--23230 talk 11:08, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The parchments are attached to each "feather", so I wouldn't be surprized if they designate each "feather" as being some region or administrative grouping. I do support the idea of having a very simplified vector version with just the eagle, cross, coats and scrolls (if they are worthwhile) in English. That would allow some template work so you could click on, say "Bayern" and open Bavaria. Distribution of seats in the Austrian Landtage has an example of what I'm thinking of. 68.39.174.238 (talk) 17:43, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, Here are two Example, Work in Progress images. The main focus is on the shields and not on the eagle, so in one version it is left as simple lines. This supplements the fact this is not meant to replace the original, and in my opinion brilliant, image, but to supplement it, to show clearly which shields are which.

I believe the left image is clearer to show the shields and their positions, but it seems a little plain, so the right compensates. Clearly if more detail is needed in the right image it could be added, but I feel it would detract from the shields. Also, at this stage I left out the banners at the bottom explaining the ranks and the titles for the shields, so it can be used on other projects, and if you can roll over to see the link it makes it somewhat unnecessary.

I certainly like the above idea as for the clickable image, and it adds to what I think this image is for. The original is best for art students and historians, but for people wanting to understand the picture and the rankings in the Empire this image could be underneath to explain. The feathers do have meanings, as I gathered from [1] here, however only as much as the top larger row shows the seven electors and, for some reason, the civil governor of Rome. I seem to gather that on the far left wing are the peasants, so I assume that the far right are the 'Great Princes'. Anyway, this [2] link from the German page seems to explain the meanings well, and gives useful information, but my German is not that good, so if anyone could translate, or know someone who could, it would be appreciated.

As I mentioned, this article on the eagle (the Quaternionenadler) exists on the German wiki, and with this image and the information gained from the article above could be a good excuse to make one here. Comments are welcome. --23230 talk 19:40, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Perfect. Both images emphasize the main content (Sub-shields) by removing the distractions of the photo. I hadn't noticed before that there WAS a "top row", but now it is clearly shown. Do you think you could go to the next step with these images? 68.39.174.238 (talk) 01:08, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I apologise for the delay, but I have been away for a while. Here is the completed Image:

Error: Image is invalid or non-existent.

Image:Quaterionenadler.svg What do you think? It shows the shields clearly. The idea of the links on the image to the page is a good one, but whilst we have pages on Brandenburg, Saxony & Magdeburg (the examples I used, in the top right hand corner), some of the shields don't have links, and some of them I couldn't find so I just copied them from the original image. As for the meanings you would have to ask a heraldry expert which I am not, sadly. If you find any differences then please say.--23230 talk 12:13, 31 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's amazzing and ought to be approved. The blue-white rhomboids are Bavaria; the bottom one on the 2nd feather to the left is Baden; bottom one on the 5th feather to the left is Lubeck, above that looks like Aachen. The top of the 1st left feather is the "Prefect of Rome", it seems. I don't know what we should do about that, since a link to Rome doesn't give any context of why a German(ic) state would have it on its coat. 68.39.174.238 (talk) 21:21, 31 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much. I belive the best way to use it would be to make an article on the Quaterionenadler, simmilar to de:Quaternionenadler on the German Wikipedia. Anyway, I suppose this is done then.--23230 talk 09:11, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've added the eagle(s) to the articel. Now people skilled in imagemaping should add the correct rectangles, because I'm guaranteed to screw some up. 68.39.174.238 (talk) 22:47, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have a question, sould the coa's not link to there respective parts of the Holy Roman Empire, for example Saxony is linked to the Free State of Saxony instead of the Electorate of Saxony? Are you guys going for current day territories or Holy Roman territories?

I also I just happend to know one of the shields, third feather from the right, bottom shield (red lion): Duchy of Limburg. also I think the red cross is the Archbishopric of Trier and the black cross is the Electorate of Cologne, the wheel next to the black cross Archbishopric of Mainz.--SelfQ (talk) 18:30, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Since this is historick, it definitely should use the historick articels, EG. Electorates, Archbishopricks, Landgravates, etc, etc. I've made the change here, and will make the change there (On the article). 68.39.174.238 (talk) 00:37, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much all of you. I have currently started on research for the shields; so far I have found about half of them. User:Martin23230/Quaterionenadler shows how far I have got, I took the list from [3], which shows the names and positions in German. The problem being that many of them seem wildly different to the current CoAs. For example, Braunschweig (Brunswick) is marked as the shield under Rome. However, on the page, its CoA is similar to Limburg, rather than the two yellow lions on a red field. Should we go with names and them link to the articles, or search for the CoAs and link to the country that way? As I said, about half of the shields have been found, but for the positions only the far left, the peasants, and the third from the right, the knights, have been translatable, the problem being it is on old German, so a translator won’t cover it, only a native speaker. Oh, and thanks SelfQ, that was one I couldn't get. In the German it is marked as Strundeck. Anyway, if anyone wants to help out they can feel free.--23230 talk 16:21, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Alberta Taciuk Processor - convert to SVG

Article(s): Oil shale extraction

Request: The PNG is public domain (U.S. Gov). Looks ideal for converting into an SVG file. -- Kaldari (talk) 23:55, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion: I've had a good go at this one, but the resolution of the image is simply too low to get anything usable. I've also had a look at the source but I can't extract anything from that of significantly better quality. If all you want is a very abstracted view of the main chambers only (the colored bits) it would be possible to create that from scratch. The fine detail underneath the processor, however, is virtually unreadable even when magnified. Debate 12:28, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is that stuff down there absolutely critical? EG. I can tell that one part of it is a stairwell, which isn't very helpful other than giving scale... 68.39.174.238 (talk) 03:22, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
According to the diagram there appears to be a range of other mechanical bits and pieces (motor, shale feed, riding rings, etc), in addition to some of the internal detail, that are too blurry to easily convert to SVG. Whether they are critical to the diagram or not is something only Kaldari can answer. Debate 08:58, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think those pieces are really critical to the diagram. Have a go at a simplified version and I'll let you know if anything really important is missing. Thanks! Kaldari (talk) 20:19, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oppinion: How's this? Debate 09:31, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The second looks a little internally strange. EG. Is the "x" in a different fontface? 68.39.174.238 (talk) 00:27, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I freely admit that I'm no expert in mathematical symbology, but that's the way the x is displayed when written as an equation in Word, as well as how it's displayed in the mathematical mark-up you used above (ie : <math>14\sqrt{x}+|15|=|71|\,\!</math>), so I presume that the typeface of the x is mathematically significant. Nonetheless, the type-face can be easily changed if required. Debate 02:59, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
For this it doesn't have to be perfect. I strongly suspect that a featured image could be found of some part of this, but will let others decide... 68.39.174.238 (talk) 23:41, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

William A. Spinks images

[Not using gallery yet, as it does not work with off-site images, and the off-site one is the original, and the one in Commons is probably not the one to work with.]

This is the best quality copy of the image that is available. It is from a microfilm photo, with too much contrast, that was scanned in at 4-bit color depth, so it does have greyscales, but not really enough.

Mucking about with it in GraphicConverter, this is the best I've been able to do with it (including mirroring horizontally so that the lit side of his face is toward the article text.

Article(s): William A. Spinks

Request: Clean up background and see if anything at all can be done to improve the picture of his face. I realize there is no greyscale information in the darkest areas, so not a lot can be done there. Is it plausible to improve this image further, or is this a lost cause? This is one of only two known publicly available photos of him. The other, near bottom of the same article, also needs cleanup, as some bit of dirt or something is on his face, making it look kind of like he has a wet cigarette hanging out of his mouth. Both images are in Commons, though I would expect that the first link above is the one that would be needed for the something to work from. I can provide the original scan of the second image as well, if needed. — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 01:23, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I understand. Thanks for trying. I did create a basic GIF image for starters, Image:Obama McCain taxes.gif. See in the above gallery. Here are some bar chart possibilities if anybody can help: Commons:Bar chart (many bar charts organized by type).

(unindent)Maybe income tax percentages would be better than actual dollar amounts. Since the change in tax rates as a range of percentages is much smaller than the dollar changes. Percentages were used in the bar charts on pages 38, 39, 46 of [5].

Maybe dollar amounts could be used if the table was broken up into 2 bar charts. One would cover the lower 7 income brackets. The other bar chart would cover the upper 2 income brackets. I think this would look good, and be easily understood without having to have a wide range in variation of length in the bars. --Timeshifter (talk) 12:57, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I just notice that the content in the pdf must be reduced to the table as well, the first two letters are not necessaryJasy jatere (talk) 16:02, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion: How's that? --pbroks13talk? 23:55, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

looks good. There are some details which could be improved.
  • last character in the k-row, red part: only the bottom "bowl" thick like that, the rest of the red part must be much thinner. Compare the different thickness of lines for p
  • the two red characters in the l row have to have a hair stroke on the left, which is very thin. you can use the right column of this table http://www.omniglot.com/images/writing/sinhala_cons.gif as a model.
  • for k and r, the pdf has lines of different thickness as well. Could you try to catch that in an svg?
  • the r (6) seems unbalanced and very "hand-written", which has to do with line weight as well, I think
Thanks for you help! Jasy jatere (talk) 10:40, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'd started a work on it but hadn't had a chance to upload until now. I've used the unicode characters from the Sinhala alphabet page (specifically p, k, r and ḷ from the consonants table and the a, u and ū from the vowels table. However, as you can see in the svg above I haven't completed the ku and kū because I can't see which characters in the table match the shapes in the pdf. Do you know which shape it should be, or if it is even in those tables, part of another character, etc? — ₪₪ ch1902 ₪₪ 11:19, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
for Lu/Luu, you can use the shapes provided for ä/ää.
for ku/kuu, there are no shapes you could copy in the imgs. The hook for short u is very similar to a Latin 'c'. The hook for uu varies, but if you take the right part of ruu and clip the 'tail' and bend it and then scale the whole thing down, you come close to it (hope that was clear ...)
Lu/Luu are missing the hairstroke on the left
smaller notes: the right arm of p should not touch the belly
The relative differences in thickness seem a bit too much, the thick parts can become a bit less Jasy jatere (talk) 12:56, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
got inkscape and meddled a bit with the img. The L's are fine now. I do not know how to 'cut' stuff, so the red parts for ku and kuu still have their topmost line, which should probably deleted. The z-like part in kuu, ruu and Luu needs to be thicker, but I do not know how to do that either, so I would appreciate help there Jasy jatere (talk) 00:03, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • OK, here's one :) What's the feature at the bottom left of the map—the line running parallel to the Mohawk and the Hudson—supposed to represent? I originally thought it was a river, but it's unlabeled in the original, I can't find it in any modern maps, and my knowledge of New England geography is pretty sketchy. Since the original contains a few inaccuracies (perhaps deliberate omissions?), I thought it better to ask. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 01:03, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm not sure exactly what you're talking about.  Are you talking about the "shaded" regions that represent elevation of over 6k feet? or did you mean the semi dotted lines that separate the old colonies?  Thanks for taking the time to do this by the way :)  - Jameson L. Tai talkcontribs 20:01, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I meant the squiggly line at the very bottom left of the map, parallel to the Hudson River and the Mohawk River. I managed to find it in the original source of the map—it's also supposed to be high ground, but the area was somehow left unhatched. Anyway, it's done now and I'll upload shortly (as soon as I finish cleaning up the code). Fvasconcellos (t·c) 20:11, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot! :D It looks awesome.  You've got to teach me how you guys do this some day! - Jameson L. Tai talkcontribs 06:55, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion: I agree that they're low quality and perhaps these should be SVG-ified, but I'll just mention that the images were created using Orbital Viewer which outputs to "TIFF, PPM, BMP, AVI, and VRML files." Also, it's Windows-only. So you won't be able to use the same source to generate the images.— ʞɔıu 13:33, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Ohio State University logo redo

Article(s): Ohio State University

Request: Our current logo is not an accurate representation of the official logo and I was told to "sofixit". I was wondering if one of the gurus here could help? Here's what we have now: Image:OSU.svg and it needs to be: http://afrotc.osu.edu/common/home_osu.gif

The background needs to be: PANTONE 200 or CMYK: four-color process formula: 0 cyan 100 magenta 65 yellow 15 black or Hexadecimal: #990000 or RGB values: 153, 0, 0 Thanks! §hep¡Talk to me! 21:22, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion: Honestly? Use the logo provided by the university, under fair use if necessary. Whoever made the SVG version did a great job, but it's just not accurate enough; the visual integrity of a logo is sacred! Color is not the only issue: the O in OHIO, for instance, has much more severe oblique stress in the actual logo (that is, the "axis" of the O is tilted much farther to the left; the stroke of the letter is thickest at the bottom left and top right), and the SVG's T · H · E and UNIVERSITY don't match the original—they should be set in Palatino, not hand-drawn. See if you can spot the difference in the "R". Fvasconcellos (t·c) 15:14, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, you can request a logo from the University in EPS format (easily converted to SVG without any modifications) here. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 01:17, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion: How's that? --pbroks13talk? 19:42, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, on a slightly unrelated question, do you just replace the image on wikipedia and add alternative to the old version, delete the old version, or something else? ηoian ‡orever ηew ‡rontiers 19:47, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Really any of those. You could have the raster image requested to be deleted, but because the image is licensed under CCA-3 and GFDL, deleting the jpg image would break the attribution path, so it probably wouldn't be deleted. The only thing to do really is to replace the jpg image with the svg version on all of the pages it is on and then leave it be. --pbroks13talk? 04:42, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. What's funny is that anyone really could have made this (or something similar) originally one, so the attribution to keep is laughable (imo, the fact that it was made into svg is what really counts), but. ηoian ‡orever ηew ‡rontiers 05:57, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Portrait of Aaron Sorkin

Article(s): Aaron Sorkin   Request: Hi: I would like to request that a kindly wikigraphist help me with creating a portrait out of the above image of Aaron Sorkin for the Infobox for the Aaron Sorkin article. This is a much more flattering picture of him than the one being currently used. I would really appreciate any help with this. Thank you. Homely Features (talk) 21:37, 20 September 2008 (UTC)   Graphist opinion: How's this? I tried cropping it closer (and wider), but it looked a bit unbalanced. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 01:35, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your crop is great. Thanks. I'm not sure if I accurately placed it in the Infobox. I removed the 110px setting to blow it up. Could be too big. However, at least now there's a decent photograph to match the remarkable wikibiography of Aaron Sorkin. Thank you for helping me. Homely Features (talk) 03:02, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sarah Palin

Article(s): Sarah Palin   Request: Hi, this image is at the top of the article.  As you'll see at the image page, it was created by cropping a much larger image, zooming, and sharpening.  I did all this myself, but my software is crummy.  Can you do a better job?  Thanks.Ferrylodge (talk) 01:00, 21 September 2008 (UTC)   Graphist opinion: Would you object to a wider crop—closer to the lectern, maybe just above the sheet of paper she's holding, and all the way to her right shoulder? Fvasconcellos (t·c) 01:23, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The main thing is to have the eyes centered.  Some people asked for that at the article talk page.  As far as how wide the crop is, please use your best judgment.  You folks are the experts, not me. :-)  Maybe you could do one with the existing crop, and one with the wider crop?Ferrylodge (talk) 01:27, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Will give this a go tomorrow morning. Eyes will be centered :) Fvasconcellos (t·c) 02:00, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(undent) Thanks, I'll look forward to seeing what you come up with.  Do you think this image or this image might be better at the top of the article?Ferrylodge (talk) 07:18, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Quality-wise, the "tracksuit" image (which was in the article for quite a while) is still the best, despite the awkward composition. I think the one above is the best substitute right now. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 15:19, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, here we go. I've made three attempts; I recommend no. 2, but I'll leave it up to you to decide which is best :) Please let me know which one you'd like to keep and I'll move it to Commons under a more descriptive filename. Best, Fvasconcellos (t·c) 15:44, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I'll go with your choice, despite the hand (it kind of humanizes the whole thing, makes it look real and spontaneous, and will make for an interesting topic of conversation). #2 it is!. BTW, did you do any sharpening?Ferrylodge (talk) 20:27, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
On second thought, I think the head's too tiny on #2, so I went with #1 (after a little bit of sharpening). Thanks.Ferrylodge (talk) 21:09, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No, I didn't do any sharpening as I didn't think it would be much of an improvement. Would you like any of the above versions kept or should I delete them? Fvasconcellos (t·c) 22:01, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your help and suggestions. I did a crop that is sort of a compromise between #1 and #2, and uploaded it, so I think we're all set now. The extras can be deleted, I think, unless you think the image now at Sara Palin can be substantially improved. Cheers.Ferrylodge (talk) 22:06, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The new version is a good compromise. There are plenty of images of Palin on Commons, and I don't think these work-in-progress versions are necessary; that's why I uploaded them locally in the first place. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 22:13, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(undent)Fvasconcellos, an editor has created another image that he thinks is better, though I disagree. What do you think? I've inserted the two images side by side (the one on the right is the current image in the article, as I write this).Ferrylodge (talk) 03:49, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that was me. I sharpened and tweaked the levels and highlights so that it is not so washed out. ≈ jossi ≈ (talk) 04:36, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • More accurate skin tone
More accurate hair color and detail
  • Face features looks sharper
  • Noise on blouse is less obvious
  • Sharper overall, such as mics, glasses details, etc.
We could tweak it further by keeping the original background, but using the sharper foreground portion
≈ jossi ≈ (talk) 04:39, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The subject's shirt is so black in Jossi's image that you can't see the folds and wrinkles. The colors in the background are so bright they look like neon. I'm not convinced that the image on the right can be improved, but surely a compromise would be better than the image on the left.Ferrylodge (talk) 05:06, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Request: match svg with the gold and brown tones of png, use pole-and-ties framework from something like http://flagspot.net/flags/jp-d_at.html to show it really is a flag Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 06:06, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion: I gave it a go, what do you think? I wasn't sure what color the pole should be so made it black for now as well as the rings. §hep¡Talk to me! 20:53, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Great start! Please make the outside top and left edge geometrically straight-per http://flagspot.net/flags/jp-d_at.html the black is the pole, the white (which looks like it should be the pole) is actually edging, please also note the straps are different shades for some reason. Thank you so much! Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 04:56, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I was looking to find something in color similar to what you gave me and I didn't have much luck. I hope this is more accurate? Once you said straps that gave me a better idea, so the middle version you see is when I was trying some ring type structures in their early phases. I hope this is better? §hep¡Talk to me! 00:06, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Getting better! Not all straps seem to reach the outside edge of the pole, yet. Anyone have thoughts whether the straps should be colored like the original photo or not? Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 00:33, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A lightbulb just clicked for me! (And now InkScape won't work..crap) As soon as I understand what the starps are I can't color them. I'll reinstall it and see what happens. §hep¡Talk to me! 00:35, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
