Original welcome message

Hello and welcome to Wikipedia! Nice work on the president articles. --mav

Subpages

Hi Minesweeper, why are you changing president links to "United States/President"? This is a subpage; subpages are no longer supported by the current software, which is why the page redirects to "President of the United States of America". If you want to link to that page, please use that link directly. (As to why subpages are no longer supported, see Wikipedia:Wikipedia subpages pros and cons). -Eloquence 13:17 Jan 24, 2003 (UTC)

Whoops, I didn't know that was being deprecated. I've changed all the links to point directly to "President of the United States of America". Thanks for letting me know. -- minesweeper 02:46 Jan 25, 2003 (UTC)

Timeline of U.S. economic indicators

I think Timeline of U.S. economic indicators is okay; updating it month-month would be hard, but annual updates could be put in pretty easily, etc. I might put in some job numbers. I'm of the opinion that there's little need to delete articles which are imperfect. --The Cunctator

Ah, I'll keep that in mind, thanks! -- Minesweeper 05:21 17 May 2003 (UTC)

Donald Duck

Hi Minesweeper, you changed the image-layout of Donald Duck, but with your change my browser can no longer show the page properly, image and text are mixed, overlayd, a lot of empty space... was this change necessary, is this some kind of "Wiki-standard"? Thanks, Fantasy

Hello Fantasy, what browser are you using? The page renders correctly for me in both Mozilla 1.3 and Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP. The markup uses Cascading Style Sheets, which is supported by most modern browsers. It's not strictly a standard, I think, but since it's efficient markup, allows a wide range of formatting options, and is supported fairly uniformly by modern browsers, it is the favored method of displaying images. It is also the markup recommended on Wikipedia:Image use policy. -- Minesweeper
Hi Minesweeper, we (5000 people at my office) use "Netscape(R) Communicator 4.61 for OS/2 Warp" (sadly), maybe 2004 we will get a newer browser... maybe. If I understand it right, we will not be able for this year to see this pages in a proper style. It is a pity, as I am really trying hard to make as many people in my organsiation use Wikipedia, but that's life... Thanks for your help, Fantasy
Aren't you supposed to be doing work at work? ;) Wikipedia does become an addiction. Well, you have something to look forward to anyway. We're glad to have you as a contributor, even if the pages don't show up quite right. -- Minesweeper

...I am no Wikipediaholic (at least not, while i am sleeping... ;-) (ok, not yet) ... And I am working in a "knowledge" Company, so Wikipedia is also part of my job! ;-) Fantasy (btw: It even happened today that one of our new recruits told me, that the trainer was telling them to use also Wikipedia in their daily job!!!! My evangelism seems to work already ;-)

Corked bat

Nice work on the corked bat article. Kingturtle 23:30 4 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Thanks. There's nothing like current events to provide some motivation. -- Minesweeper 00:23 5 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Good day, Minesweeper. I edited the June 3rd 'Sammy Sosa' news-bite to report Sosa having 1 cork bat and 76 other bats (instead of 77 other). If I'm incorrect on this issue, you may undo my edit. Your call. Be well. Usedbook 00:05 5 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Thanks for the update. I think you're correct. -- Minesweeper 00:23 5 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Hi there. Opps. I hadn't realised that I had created a similar page twice. I have deleted the text of one of them and turned it into a redirect. Thanks for notifying me of the mistake. FearÉIREANN 20:09 23 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Main Page vote

Hi, you cast a vote in the TEMP5 debate. The Temp5 proposal was voted down by 61.3% to 38.6%. But even that wasn't clearcut, 17 voted no to Temp5. 19 voted no to temp5 but didn't say keep the current page, and 8 endorsed the current page. So the decision was an ambiguous no decision. Clearly we seem to be going around in circles on the whole issue of the main page. A new definitive vote is now taking place to clarify what exactly we want, to end the endless ambiguities and re-votes, namely

  1. Do we actually want to have a new page? Y/N
  2. If so when (immediately, after a pause, timed to the press release, etc)?
  3. What do people want on the front page and what do they want excluded?

As of now, the whole issue seems surrounded by complete confusion. This way, finally and definitively, we will know what we want and when we want it. So do please express your opinions. The vote is on the same page as the previous votes. FearÉIREANN 20:31, 13 Aug 2003 (UTC)

BellSouth

Hello Minesweeper, I've decided that I don't want to get into a war with you over what information should and should not be on a a wiki page, So I am simply leaving your changes on BellSouth as is and I will no longer try to put a link to CNBC on that wikipage. But if I find pertinent information I would like to add it as new information and of course making sure that the link are appropriate. - Anonymous.

I understand, and I wish to avoid an edit war as well. First of all, we try to avoid using inline external links, instead placing them in a list at the end of the article. Second, we usually just give the ticker symbol, and let users take that to any financial site they wish. See for example, Network Associates, Honeywell, ING Group. Nevertheless, your contributions are greatly appreciated. -- Minesweeper 15:28, Oct 7, 2003 (UTC)

Excessive?

What is excessive wikification? there a good line / rule of thumb?reddi 00:08, 20 Oct 2003 (UTC)

There is this: Wikipedia:Make only links relevant to the context, but it's a disputed policy. Basically, the most relevant words should be the ones that are wikified. Also, if every word is linked, it becomes hard to read, and the articles linked may not refer to the right context. We should link articles that possibly provide some background about the event listed, or words that some people may not know the meaning of. Articles linked from words like "kill", "dirt", "road", or "south" provide little or no additional information, and everyone basically knows what these words mean. -- Minesweeper 00:39, Oct 20, 2003 (UTC)

Hillenbrand

I don't mind you changing 'rumour' to 'rumor' (Hillenbrand is American after all) but 'judgement' is a perfectly good spelling. Changing it is pretty petty. :( Varitek 12:00pm Oct 22 2003 (BST)

  • Thanks for the reply. Sorry if I was a little snippy :) Varitek

On recent departures...

Good point -I hadn't considered that, but I think they are generalising what Wiwaxia does too much and taking it as a reflection of the whole community which I don't think it is. I agree that article is "a joke in regards to neutrality" and I wish they had stayed to help fix it instead of letting it drive them away. Much of it also reads like it was written by a child. Perhaps some people need to look up the term encyclopedia and try to understand what that means before writing here. Good luck if you do try to sort it out. I think the condensing of that section is a good idea. Angela 16:04, Oct 25, 2003 (UTC)

Roach bait

Okay, I'm so new here. I still have that new user smell. You made comments on my edits to roach bait: "The text doesn't seem very well-written or NPOV either". I understand NPOV, but I fail to understand how I violated it. And as to the "not very well-written", could you please expand?

Okay, I've made some changes to undercover marketing, but I'd like your feedback on them. I'm still getting used to the style guidelines and conventions.

Jamaica

Hello Minesweeper Thank you for your remarks about Jamaica. But I have a good excuse. While I was working on the article, I experienced a technical problem and I lost my connection to the internet for quite a long time. So I was unable to complete my edit. There were more of those things! Thanks for finding them. I'd thought I'd done them all. Angela 04:02, 17 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Arrrrgh! I'd done the ones on VfD and in his sandbox. I had no idea there were all those as well. Thanks for helping, I was getting rather fed up with them. :) Angela

Deletions

You just deleted many date-redirects, because it was decided in VfD to do so. Currently, User:Eclecticology is creating them all again. I am deleting them, but I will be going to sleep soon. Kingturtle 06:18, 17 Nov 2003 (UTC)

"AIDS kills fags dead" and associated redirects were not deleted after being listed on VfD since 16 Nov: Martin decided to count votes only on Talk:AKFD/redirect. I'm assuming he will honour them there. If you still want to vote on the matter, you may want to make sure your votes are registered there. -- Someone else 19:32, 22 Nov 2003 (UTC)

SQL

Hi, please can you be a bit more judicious in your use of database queries. The Wikipedia:Database queries pages states "please try to avoid re-running queries that take more than, say, 10 seconds." Some of yours are lasting nearly five minutes! Angela 22:30, 22 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Will do. Thanks for the heads up! Minesweeper

I restored the Bush talk archive redirects for the purposes of avoiding broken links. Martin 01:06, 28 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Moving stuff

Hello, regarding your recent move of Martin Fierro to Martín Fierro, please use the built-in "move this page" feature. Doing so will move not only the content of the page to a new title, but will move all the editing history along with it. Since you copy-and-pasted, the edit history is now scattered between Martin Fierro and Martín Fierro. Thanks, —Minesweeper 14:00, 4 Dec 2003 (UTC) Sorry. News to me. First time I moved anything. I'll do that in the future. In any case, the history wasn't very interesting, it was pretty much all me. -- Jmabel 18:18, 4 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Stop moving things to automobile particularly things with a British context. Automobile is infrequently used outside of the USA. Mintguy 11:15, 7 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Seconded; and I also am of the opinion that moving every car maker to 'xxx automobile' (rather than 'xxx (automobile)' or 'xxx (car)' is not an improvement. It seems a bit of a clunky construction to me. --Morven 19:22, 7 Dec 2003 (UTC)

-re/-er

Hi, Minesweeper. Wow, I must say you're a real whiz with the formatting - never seen such a nice user-page :-) Anyway, I saw your edit on the spelling theatre in the US. I'm a Brit and I was in SF about a month ago (and went up the Sather Tower!) and noticed that even cinemas called themselves theatres, so-spelt, which I found puzzling. Is that spelling thought to be classier or something? I also noticed that a print-shop on Van Ness uses colour in its title - is that the same reason?

Spellbinder 08:38, 14 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Quote from AUE: FAQ excerpt: "-er" vs "-re":
"Theatre" has some currency in the U.S., especially in names of specific theatres.

To answer your question "why 'Mr. Dean', but not 'Mr. Sharpton,'" I copied that paragraph from VOANews. In any case, I agree with your changes, it's much nicer now. Anthony DiPierro 22:29, 15 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Hey, you go to University of California, Berkeley? You must know my friend Adora.

Anyway, the reason I'm writing this is that I question your decision to move Mulholland Drive (movie) to Mulholland Dr.. While on the signpost logo at the beginning of the movie and on the DVD does say "Dr.", all the official websites refer to the movie as "Mulholland Drive" (except when using the signpost logo, of course). This includes [MulhollandDrive.com and the page for it at UniversalStudios.com. Please write back. -Branddobbe 20:30, Jan 24, 2004 (UTC)

Congress members' names

The names you are changing are in the forms given at the official Congressional Biography Website. I think you should leave them as they are. If you change them, however, you must also change them at List of members of the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. House election, 2004. Adam 06:42, 14 Feb 2004 (UTC)

I guess that's OK then. I didn't realise 108th United States Congress existed. It seems rather redubdant when List of members of the U.S. House of Representatives and List of members of the U.S. Senate are better designed and more informative. Perhaps it should be abolished and redirected to them. Adam 08:54, 14 Feb 2004 (UTC)

All these name changes you are making (A.J. Smith to A. J. Smith) are in contrvention of the Wikipedia naming policy:

Initials in people's names, or companies named after them, should be written with periods after them, with a space between the initials and the name, but not between initials. Thus, W.E.B. Dubois, I.F. Stone, T.E. Lawrence, and F.W. de Klerk. Adam 12:29, 15 Feb 2004 (UTC)

I am not suprised to see that WP has two different policies at two different pages. The text above is copied from one of them, but I am at a different computer today and I can't locate where I copied it from. Adam 05:08, 16 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Les Mis programme image

Hi, Minesweeper, I just happened upon File:Les Misérables program.jpg and can't help but worry of a possible copyright violation. The production company came up with the Cosette image overlaid on the French Tricolour and the design of the cover. That said, it might be reasonable to claim that its application in Wikipedia is fair use, in which case there is a special tag to include in the image description for that purpose, {{msg:fairuse}}. IANAL; I'm just hoping to keep Wikipedia squeeky clean for everyone's enjoyment. I imagine it would be appropriate to write to the production company and ask permission to use the picture (or one they provide) for the Wikipedia article, much in the way they provide images with press releases. [2][3][4] If this message offended, I would it be amended. -- Ke4roh 14:07, 16 Feb 2004 (UTC)
