What the heck is this gonna do? RoyBoy 05:03, 22 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hi; I'm sorry to say, but I'm not well versed in the subject and would feel uncomfortable writing any new content for the article. As for the abortionbreastcancer.com link, I think it's very inappropriate; it is included as an in-line referencial link to an already referenced statement by the Lancet which disproves a connection between abortion and breast cancer. The National Cancer Institute also disproves such a connection. I've never heard of a reliable, objective study which proves such a connection. (Disclaimer: I'm rather liberal in my politics, and thus pro-choice. I don't think abortion is a good thing, and I don't think most other pro-choicers do either; we simply believe it's a choice that rests between the mother and whatever belief system she subscribes to, and the state should have no part in it. So even if there were a risk of breast cancer, it's still the mother's prerogative.)

As for the "ABC connection" itself, you're free to write about it if you wish; keep in mind our neutrality policy of course, and for such a controversial subject, it'd be best to provide solid citations for all claims. I can't guarantee it won't be edited mercilessly or removed entirely, of course (not by me). We also have a "no original research" policy which would preclude anything not covered in a primary source (Wikipedia is meant to be a secondary source). So, editor beware. ;)

Regarding Dr. Joel Brind, I don't think he's as objective as you think: he's a self-described born-again Christian who has stated that he "[feels] compelled to use science for its noblest, life-saving purpose." [1] So, he has one hefty axe to grind, which has put him "completely at odds with his peers" (same link). He's on the fringe, and it seems only layman pro-life advocates actually support his research. Personally, I wouldn't cite him to back up anything on this subject.

To answer your last question: Abortion gets far less vandalism than, say, Wikipedia:Community Portal or either US Presidential candidates' articles. Even so, none of these articles are protected as a matter of course; this would be contrary to the "wiki way", where only high risk pages (e.g. policy pages, the main page, heavily-used templates, etc.) are protected indefinitely. If there's an edit war or a massive vandalism attack on the abortion article, it is protected temporarily. These protections usually span less than a week, because it's a last resort. Articles should be editable by everyone; with enough dedicated users watching, vandalism doesn't go unnoticed for long, and would certainly be fixed quickly on such a high profile article. (On the other hand, in the case of abortionbreastcancer.com, the link should have been removed or at the very least repositioned long ago.)

Hope this answers your questions satisfactorily. If there's anything else, please feel free to contact me again. Hijacking Catastrophe

Hey, I'm a big fan of that Jaynes book too. It's one of those intriguing theories (if I can use that word) that cannot possibly be disproved and just could be right. I have the feeling the page on the documentary will be deleted though, or at least will occasion a vote. "Non-notable" will be the cry. But I notice that another recent change is a page on an episode of South Park! Maybe you could expand the article into something a bit broader, a piece on post-9/11 dissenting opinions? Now that would be well worth reading. There was a BBC doco recently on the same subject. I think it was called Manufacturing Terror. If you don't know it, maybe you'd like to google it. There's a review, I know, on [the Guardian's site]. Dr Zen 07:04, 28 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Dundas, Ontario

Thanks for your edits to Dundas, Ontario; I wasn't aware of the West Wing connection and it's interesting. Are you from Dundas originally? I'm just curious, as I'm from there myself, though I now live in Waterloo. --Saforrest 23:43, Dec 9, 2004 (UTC)

Re: Presidential Purple

I don't know if there's an "efficient" way to look for when it was removed from the article. The only way I can think of is to scroll through the history of the page. — J3ff 05:20, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Abortion history

I created the redirect because the page didn't have any real content yet. Since you're still working on it, I've reverted the page. I don't know what lost links you are referring to, though; the article only had two (20th century and developing world). —tregoweth 06:18, Jan 11, 2005 (UTC)

No problem. You could have reverted it as well; we both have the same amount of power here. :) —tregoweth 06:23, Jan 11, 2005 (UTC)
Yeah :')... I was working on External links. It was my fault really... I should have pasted prior to copying something else. Oh well, I hadn't found many yet. Hopefully with help the article will shape up prior to being labeled an ugly duckling. - RoyBoy [] 06:24, 11 Jan 2005 (UTC)

David Carnegie

Sorry about squashing your unit and spacing edits. I appreciate you taking it with good humour.

I felt kind of bad reverting so many of your links, but the truth is: the so-called Lakes are just saltpans in the middle of nowhere, Western Australia is so flat that every insignificant little hill gets called a Mount, and the people mentioned would be unknown to history except for their minor relationships with Carnegie.

Keep up the good work. Drew Devereux 01:53, 18 Jan 2005 (UTC)

800x600

Hi RoyBoy, I notice you edited my post to the Huygens Probe article. I have no objection to the edit at all, I am just looking to learn more. You mentioned 800x600 compliance. What is that, please? This was my first attempt to upload an image and place it in an article. I want to make sure I am following all the relevant guidelines for future postings. Thanks. Johntex 03:43, 20 Jan 2005 (UTC)

A note on your edits

Hi - I just wanted to ask that whenever you make an edit, even a minor one, please put a summary. Thanks! Mikeage 19:28, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the kind words

You're very generous with your praise -- I'm glad you like the portal design.  :)

You look like an interesting fella from your user page; we share a lot of the same interests. I've had Blade Runner on my watchlist since doing some cleanup there a while back, but I was hoping someone with a real knowledge of the movie would come along to give it more depth. Fond of the movie, but don't own it, so I haven't actually seen it in a long time. I like the other movies on your list too (although I enjoy Fight Club the book almost more than the movie.) Wow, you've done a lot of good work since joining us in October; I look forward to seeing more of it in the future! Best wishes... --Catherine\talk 04:49, 30 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I’ve noticed that you’ve made a few edits and additions to the kibbutz article. I was wondering if you would like to vote on the article becoming a Featured Article. For some reason, NO ONE votes either way on kibbutz (only 4 votes last time). I don’t know why.

Fair use

Are you sure you meant to tag your own image as "fair use"? Fair use only makes sense as some sort of excuse if we can't get permission from the copyright owner. If you created the image, you are the copyright owner and you can actually give us a license to use your picture, which among other things allows the use of the image in other language WPs where fair use is not an established concept. Can I ask you to put some license on the Oriental poppy image? Rl 17:56, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

FYI, it would appear Cyberia23 will no longer be editing (at least for ST). I guess he's not much for collaboration with others on the ST stuff...or something. Deckard

Look, I'm very unhappy about recent edits to this page. For one, somehow my side-by-side format has been both messed up and ignored. For two, some of my most carefully-worded neutral comments have been taken out.

I dislike edit warring and, in any case, this is not my dog, let alone my fight. If this is how I'm rewarded for helping out, I'll stay away. — Xiongtalk 05:34, 2005 Apr 25 (UTC)

It's clear that is the best option for you if you're not prepared to be edited mercilessly. I found some of your "neutral" statements excluded Western philosophy and were condesending and talkative (walk into a sequel?); as to your format I believe it important to prioritize (seperate) opinions of those directly involved from film canon. Shrug: if your beef is primarly with the other guy... well, he means well... the kicker is I do too. The editing that has occurred thus far is hardly a war (although I concede it could turn into that); but I'd submit to you the editing to an article you created equals thanks in Wikiworld. Lastly I'll try to maintain the valid perspective you've added for posterity... when I'm sober and can figure out a compromise with the pertinent historical points V added. - RoyBoy 800 07:17, 25 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Look, edit all you like. I'm not going to return to the page and fuddly with it. I'm sorry if you think I'm oversensitive; every single thing of substance I have done in this project (and I don't include "Deckard", since that was mere janitorial work) has been relentlessly crapped on by my dark brother, Netoholic. If you don't see the virtue in maintaining side-by-side format, trash it. I didn't abstract that material; I thought it was a good idea when I saw another user try to do so. I formatted it as a neutral party -- I'd appreciate it if you would respect that. If you don't, well, fine too. — Xiongtalk 07:28, 2005 Apr 25 (UTC)

I like the format, great improvement. Might not remain aligned as it once was, but it'll remain. Sorry to hear about your dark brother, I have mini dark brothers hopping around. :) - RoyBoy 800 07:39, 25 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I think Deckard is human or a replican looks pretty good now. I look at it carefully some day to see if there is any small tweak to make. vaceituno

Blade Runner

A collection of thoughts on the article.

It's extremely anachronistic to refer to Blade Runner as belonging to the cyber punk genre. The term was absolutely unknown at the time the movie was made. I see that the Cyberpunk entry also refers to this movie. I suppose one could defend this usage because names for literary forms are sometimes coined retrospectively. It does read a little oddly to me, though. Cyberpunk was a particular movement in my view, to which neither Philip K, Dick not Ridley Scott ever consciously subscribed.

The word "dystopic" is overused in my opinion.

"Deeley secured financing from the film from a range of sources (which later proved to be a problem) and secured the services of director Ridley Scott". --Overuse of the word "secured."

Use of the term "Sci-Fi". Yuk. The term is science fiction.

I think the article makes far too much of the fact that a Millennium Falcon model was used as part of the skyline in Blade Runner. Also I see little resemblance between the rather prettified cityscapes of the Star Wars prequels and the messy skyline in Blade Runner. They seem to be more like those of a Spielberg movie like AI or Minority Report. I think the article is POV at this point.

Vangelis and Syd Mead should probably be credited in the opener. The music and production design are as important in this movie as the direction and principal cast.

Some later parts of the article seem to be interpretation disguised as fact. Original research. Bad stuff. Christian symbolism? Really! --Tony Sidaway|Talk 11:49, 8 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Bootleg images are ok, I think - after all, they are *relevant* images. Make sure all former FAC objections were adressed - I still don't think they were (trivia, for example). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 23:12, 13 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I just thought I would offer you some wiki-thanks for your contributions. In particular your continuous efforts on the Blade Runner article. Its not always been easy, but it looks like the article has come on a long way in the past few months. -- Solipsist 09:02, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Merci for the wiki-thanks, it feels good for the wiki-soul. I'd like to request a barnstar of some sort for Cburnett for his hard work and excellent layout of Star Trek lists. - RoyBoy 800 06:08, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Not only can you request a barnstar, but you can also bestow them. If you think Cburnett deserves to be recognised, pick an appropriate star from Wikipedia:Barnstars on Wikipedia and add it to their talk page with a note of why (you might find it helps to copy the layout from a star that someone else has given). Its not just the star, its knowing that others are watching and appreciating your contributions, so it is best if the star comes from someone who knows them. -- Solipsist 06:29, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

ST images

Just saw your addition of Image:ST-VOY Real Life.jpg and wanted to ask you about what kind of processing you do or how you acquire them. Compared to the images I upload (e.g., Image:ST-VOY The Raven.jpg) your images are dim and low-constast/low-saturation. It's kind of funny cuz I can go through the TNG list and pick out mine, Cyberia's and your's just by looking at them. :)

For me, I take a screenshot in GIMP then play with the curves to generally brighten them up. Then I use an unsharpen mask to make them crisper. Cburnett 05:25, Jun 16, 2005 (UTC)

Usually I do it with an radeon all-in-wonder and I capture from TV, I have to brighten them quite a bit but apart from that I don't do much since I don't have much of an eye for graphics. (although I do recognize my captures fuzziness) Occasionally I'll capture a frame from a Divx I download, but that's once in a blue moon. - RoyBoy 800 05:32, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

List of Star Trek: TNG episodes

After capturing, touching up, uploading, and inserting 122 ST:TNG images...I was thinking of seeing about nominating List of Star Trek: TNG episodes for featured article. Yeah, kind of weird nominating an episode list but it's the finest episode list I know of on WP.

I was wondering if you had any input to make it better than it is before I put it up for peer review.

Blade Runner Game edit

Hi Roy, thanks a heck of a lot for adding those images to that blade runner game page. Looks awesome and seems practically complete now, I'd spent awhile adding to what was previously a stub as I'd progressed through the game.

Problems with the Wolverine entry

Hi, Roy. Hope I'm doing this right. I need to ask you something: I'm currently embroiled in a disagreement with the user Britney Spears over our continued back-on-forth switching of content for the entry, Wolverine (comics). If you look at my talk page, you'll see that he/she's a bit less-than-constructive in the way he/she disagrees with me, accusing me of "lying," "vandalism," "antagonizing" people, and so forth. I've tried to assert to him/her that I'm simply trying to contribute to the site, and I respond to his differing opinion on whether Wolverine has superhuman strength by actually incorporating his point of view and even the evidence he points to in my revisions, and he/she simply continues to revert the entry to its prior state. Any suggestions? Thanks again.  :-) Nightscream Sat; 6.25.05.; 12:22am EST.

Hi, Roy. I'm in the middle of a revert war with parties who not only want to delete the contributions I made to the section on Superhuman Abilities on the Wolverine page, but who attack me and my motives at every opportunity, accusing me of being a vandal, a troll, distorting my words and my position, etc. Attempts to discuss the matter, both on the article's discussion page and on our user pages, yield the same results, despite my attempts to approach the matter dispassionately and politely. Can you advise? Nightscream Tue. 7.12.05. 1:58am EST.

Emergency with the Michael Jackson Page

Help! I was trying to edit down the Michael Jackson page, because the disclaimer at the top said that at 46K, it was too long. In the edit window, only the portion up to the section on Jackson's nosejobs was shown, so I just assumed that my changes would only affect everything up until then, and that I'd have to click on the "edit" links for the sections following that, but when I finally hit "save page," to my horror, I saw that EVERYTHING after that was gone! The earlier version is visible on the History page for that article, of course, but I don't know how to restore it. Help! Nightscream 8.8.05. 11:43pm EST

Thanks. Journalist fixed it. Btw, can you advise me on a problem I'm having with the Wolverine article? I've been embroiled in a back-and-forth revert war with a couple of others who not only show nothing but contempt for the details I try to contribute to the section on Wolverine's powers, but have attacked me with false accusations, lies, and logical fallacies. They've accused me of being a troll, a vandal, of deliberately trying to antagonize others, and act as if they own the page, while claiming that it is I who has somehow insulted them. They are against my citing specific instances in which his powers have been demonstrated, and even though another user, Netoholic tried to step in and suggest we compromise (me by editing out some of my detail, they by stating what else they want taken out) they simply undo all of the details I leave in, so that it just ends up being the original shorter version that conforms to their personal aesthetics. Every time I time I make a newer, shorter, edit, one of them comes up with a new reason why something's wrong with it, or some other wording of my contributions that doesn't really improve it. Netoholic hasn't participated in the discussion for some time now, and if someone else doesn't step in, I'm not sure if this'll have to go to arbitration, or what. I know you may not be into comics, but that's not really relevant, as it's more a matter of what entry would be best in terms of detail and length, and of the personal animosity and lack of civility that the users ScifiterX and SoM seem to be showing me. Your intervention would be appreciated. Perhaps you could go to the Wolverine (comics)/Temp page, look at the History of that page, and see our differnet verisons, and tell me what you think? You can either voice your opinion on which is better, or perhaps step in as an unbiased observer? Thanks again. Nightscream 8.9.05. 11:35am EST

Your suggestions are appreciated. Out of curiosity, how much time do you think is appropriate to wait? I've been looking at countless random articles constantly since first coming here, both to see how things work, and to contribute my two cents, either in small matters like fixing spelling, wording or punctuation, to more bold things like creating entire sections for articles, and even entire articles. Also, how would I go about making this proposal, and to who? And how do you feel I should deal with ScifiterX's slanderous attacks and lies upon me? Might that not damage my reputation with others that read those things by him? (It already happened with Steve block, who initially came out on ScifiterX's side, and then came to admit that he had a change of heart when he read all the material between ScifiterX and myself that showed that ScifiterX was the one acting in violation of Wikipedia's civility rule. Thanks again. Nightscream 8.10.05. 3:25am EST

More on Amorrow

RoyBoy: This is you-know-who. Geni got pressured in locking me out by a group of users lead and hyped up by Xaa.

http://home.earthlink.net/~amorrow/wacky.html

Geni expected me to take it quitely. It took Geni 2 seconds to flick the OFF switch on User:Amorrow and Geni put no further visible effort into the issue at all. I had a simple rule: Every 24 hours, I escalate wihtout limit on verbal tactics if no response is given. I declared the last 24 hour round earlier this week. I never got any response from Geni. Ever. I know what they want: they want me to beg. No thanks. I eventually gave up on Geni and moved on to Jimbo. I also gave Jimbo a chance to undo this mess. No dice. That is my attitude: he was getting my free labor, but that is mostly over. I still like the W idea, but I will never identify my work again and rarely participate in the cesspool of discussion tabs.

Note how everything else I did is ignored: Geni took the one line, redefined me to the one line only, and hid everything else. What am I supposed to do? Thank this person for their extensive mentoring or something?

To my surprise, W is the Personality Cult and Geni's and Jimbo's self-satisfied "I locked you out and now you have to beg to get back in" attitude that has turned me off from ever registering with Wikiepdia again. W reeks of high-school mentality: both on socials issues and authority issues. I went to a private high school where you were assumed to be a good (well, Catholic) person until proven otherwise. I would also never go back to my old school (what adult would?), but at least the premise was that we were working to improve ourselves. I never got into multi-users dungeons (MUD) aspect of any Internet site either.

I was just here expecting an experience of a researcher in a library, expecting some mentoring and nuturing if my style clashed. Instead, I got lynched. It seems that the main instigator, User:Xaa has also dropped out of W. I probably had something to do with that, but I will never know. So that means no more vfd's for him, but, even though I dislike him, I already sugggested to him that he set up an off-site mentoring facility.

I had expected a little more out of W, but it is the same old thing: the moment someone votes you off the island, you are expected to walk away quitely, because the people in charge are so obsessed about controlling all communication, especially anything critical or even humorous. I am sure you thought that blocking users was for vandalism. Think again.

Good luck with W, but behave yourself! 204.147.187.240 12:37, 20 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use of Blade Runner images

Hi. After hacking on it a while, I put Cyberpunk up for peer review, with a view to FA candidacy somewhere down the line. I noticed you added a screenshot of Blade Runner to the film section. It looks good and works well, but do you have any particular comments about its fair use status? The model I have been suggested to follow is Sunset Boulevard (film) and its associated images, and the screenshots in that article have image descriptions which emphasize, among other things, that no free or public domain images from the movie exist. Is this the case for Blade Runner, in your experience?

Any other comments on the cyberpunk article would be appreciated, of course. I'm not in any particular rush to push it to FA (snagged that medal with Three Laws of Robotics and The Giver), but I would like to keep as many people involved as possible.

Thanks. 18.19.0.42 17:14, 24 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

CDVF

Did you intend for that note to go to CryptoDerk's talk page? I'm afraid I don't know anything about CDVF. :-)Dan | Talk 06:05, 11 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Request

I am asking past editors of the Karl Rove page to weigh in on a survey. If you can spare a couple of minutes, please visit this page: Talk:Karl Rove/September Survey, read the introduction, and answer the three questions that have been posed. Thank you. paul klenk 08:59, 16 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your response. Regarding your suggestion that I "Create a proposal and ask for support so that users may if they wish vote," I thought it would be a better idea to see whether such a proposal would be welcome. Your suggestion is a good one. I just needed to find out whether it would sound like I was coming out of a clear blue sky, before showing up with a proposal. Kind regards, paul klenk 19:23, 16 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

'Pedia in the Media

The best place to note citations of Wikipedia in the press is Wikipedia:Wikipedia as a press source 2005 (Note the sidebar at right with other places to put citations in blogs/etc.). After doing my own citation hunting, I've been checking there before submitting the "in the news" bit for the Signpost. If there's something particularly cool, drop a note on my talk page, so I have time to research a bit if necessary before Monday press time. Thanks! — Catherine\talk 03:50, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

He's been blocked for 24 hours. By the way, have you ever considered applying for adminship? You've certainly been around long enough, and have plenty of edits. I'd be happy to nominate you, if you like. Ral315 02:35, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It's done. Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/RoyBoy. And good luck :) Ral315 02:50, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I assume you're working on it, but don't forget to fill in your acceptance, as well as questions for the candidate. Ral315 03:21, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Abortion

Hey, I noted that in various abortion articles, Joel Brind is referred to just as "Dr. Brind". I changed it in one article but noted it in others, and you seem to be careful, so I'm wondering why only the first-name reference? I could understand doing the "Dr X" formulation with respect to just authors of studies, but since his general contribution seems to be greater than that (e.g., he's not just a random researcher but a pretty activie participant in the debate) I think he deserves his full name. Thanks. Geoff.green 02:51, 23 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations! Consesus being reached you will now be given the admin's tools. However there is a bug in the system and hence we cannot set access rights as of now. Special:makesysop is used to set admin rights and currently an error: "page not recognized by Wikipedia" is being displayed. If this is rectified, you will see "you do not have permission to access...". Bureaucrats will be checking this page periodically, if you notice it resolved before a bureaucrat does, please feel to contact any one of them (special:listusers). Thank you for your patience.
