Dance Dance Revolution EXTREME 2 is the ninth home version of Dance Dance Revolution to be released in the United States. It was released by Konami on September 29th, 2005 for the Sony PlayStation 2 video game console. It is expected that there will be around 70 songs available in total in this version. It was announced in a press release (PDF) by Konami on May 17, 2005, and unveiled at the expo in Los Angeles that same day.

Currently, 24 songs are confirmed for release, including one by E-Rotic, In The Heat Of The Night. Konami had previously been reluctant to release songs by the German pop group, known for its sexually explicit lyrics, on United States versions of Dance Dance Revolution. Seven songs from the group, including the aforementioned, had been released on Japanese versions of DDR previously. The particular song chosen is relatively tame. The decision may have been pushed by the fact that a competing dance game, In The Groove, had licensed and released two E-Rotic songs in its game, both also relatively tame selections. Largely due to the inclusion of E-Rotic, DDR EXTREME 2 is rated Everyone 10+ by the Entertainment Software Rating Board, with the billets for Mild Lyrics and Suggestive Themes. It is Konami's first game release with the E-10+ rating.

Due to the outcry over the elimination of the Song Wheel interface in the US version of DDR EXTREME, it will be restored in DDR EXTREME 2. The Groove Radar feature will also reappear. New mini-games, some requiring the Eye Toy digital camera peripheral, will be made. In addition, for the first time in PlayStation DDR games, online gameplay will be enabled.

There were suggestions that DDR EXTREME 2 may be released in Japan, and possibly Europe as well, simultaneously with the already announced U.S. release, making it the first universal Dance Dance Revolution release. Previously, U.S. versions of games had differing song selections from Japanese versions, and Europe has a whole different name for the DDR franchise (Dancing Stage). The online gameplay feature is described by Konami as "global", and images on a teaser page connected to the Japanese DDR home version gateway are similar to images in the DDR EXTREME 2 introduction video. On September 6, 2005, Konami announced Dance Dance Revolution STR!KE as the name of the new Japanese version of DDR, and confirmed it would have the same interface as DDR EXTREME 2, but also would have different music, and would be released some time in 2006.

The online features of DDR EXTREME 2 will be made available exclusively to players who use a broadband connection to access online gaming functions of the Playstation 2. Players who use an analog modem will be unable to play the game online.

It is worth noting that the term Dance Dance Revolution EXTREME 2 first appeared as a 2004 April Fool's Day joke by the BemaniStyle website in the form of an alleged new arcade game release in Japan. No Japanese arcade releases of Dance Dance Revolution have been made since the release of Dance Dance Revolution EXTREME in 2002, though a new European arcade game, Dancing Stage Fusion, was released in 2005 based on the corresponding home version.
