Sangamon County is a county located in the state of Illinois. As of 2000, the population is 188,951. Its county seat is Springfield, Illinois6.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,271 km² (877 mi²). 2,249 km² (868 mi²) of it is land and 23 km² (9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.01% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 188,951 people, 78,722 households, and 49,909 families residing in the county. The population density is 84/km² (218/mi²). There are 85,459 housing units at an average density of 38/km² (98/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.42% White, 9.65% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 1.10% Asian American, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 1.21% from two or more races. 1.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 78,722 households out of which 30.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.20% are married couples living together, 11.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.60% are non-families. 31.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.97.
In the county the population is spread out with 25.00% under the age of 18, 8.10% from 18 to 24, 29.70% from 25 to 44, 23.70% from 45 to 64, and 13.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 91.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.30 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $42,957, and the median income for a family is $53,900. Males have a median income of $37,696 versus $28,814 for females.
