Lake Oswego High School (LOHS) is a public high school in Lake Oswego, Oregon in the Lake Oswego School District. Lake Oswego is a four-year comprehensive high school with a rigorous academic curriculum. Having attained the highest SAT scores in the Portland, Oregon Metro Southwest area, and as one of Oregon's highest academic ranking high schools, LOHS is accredited through the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. The school day consists of four periods on an alternative day rotation.

As of the 2005-06 school year, the school had an enrollment of 1,266 students and 54 classroom teachers (on a FTE basis, for a student-teacher ratio of 23:4.[1]

History

The doors of Lake Oswego High School were first opened in 1950. Since then it has grown from a six-year school to a three-year and (in 1971) to a four-year school. The co-curricular and vocational programs offered help to present a balanced curriculum to meet the needs of all students. In its history the school and other Lake Oswego schools have received many honors for scholarship, leadership, and athletics on the local, state, and national level.

From its location and name, Lake Oswego High School adopted a nautical theme. The nickname is “Lakers.” The colors are navy blue, like the deepest ocean representing steadfast loyalty; and white; like the crests of waves, representing purity. The anchor is the school symbol and suggests steadfast purpose. The mascot is a seaman dressed in raingear, who is called “Pilot Joe.” Continuing to carry out the theme are the names of the school’s several publications: Lake Views, (newspaper), Laker Log (yearbook), Daily Log (bulletin), Helmsman (weekly faculty newsletter and calendar), Reflections (literary yearbook), and this Pilot (handbook). Also named using the nautical theme are the Show Choir "The Windjammers", the Boys quartet the "Poop Decks", and the Girls quartet the "Dockside Dollies". Interestingly enough, though, the lake isn't even remotely visible from the school, being through around a kilometer of hills and trees to the nearest point.

In order to build tradition and to demonstrate loyalty, graduating classes have added to the school various gifts:

  • On the deck-like area near the flagstaff the Class of 1957 placed an anchor and planted a rose garden. It has been sitting in the back of the faculty parking lot ever since the remodel.
  • The bronze seal mounted on the wall in the main entry hall was a gift of the class of 1958.
  • In 1960, the graduating class began a scholarship for every following senior class.
  • The Class of 1963 donated the concession stand at the west end of the running track, although it was replaced in the recent remodeling.
  • The baseball dugout arose from the generosity of the Class of 1964.
  • The school received a beautiful custom-built speaker’s podium from the class of 1988.
  • The Class of 2000 donated two large banners with the lyrics to the school's fight song and alma mater that now hang in the new West gym. The class also had two anchors painted on the East gym floor.
  • The Class of 2004 had "Lakers" painted on the wall in the new West gym.

New Building

LOHS's new building opened in 2005 and included a 500 seat theater and vaulted ceiling cafeteria.

In the fall of 2005 students entered a totally rebuilt building. (In the spring of 2004 students entered the half-built building.) Built on the same campus, the new building totally replaces the old one. Every classroom has built-in projectors and SMART boards. A state of the art theater and art classrooms, cherry paneling and green marble staircases grace the halls.

Construction of the new school included a new gymnasium. The new gym replaces the “old” gym and created a problem with naming the existing “new gym.” In 2004, the previously called “new” gym (which prior to being called the "new" gym, was called the "boy's" gym, after its construction in the early 1960's) was renamed the “East” gym and the most recently constructed gym was deemed the “West” gym.

Laker Broadcasting

Laker Broadcasting is a student run sports broadcasting team, founded in 2002, that broadcasts LOHS’s football, baseball, girl's basketball, and boy's basketball games live over the Internet on www.lakerbroadcasting.com. In October 2005, Laker Broadcasting streamed their first live video broadcast of a LOHS football game against Clackamas.

The broadcasts are totally student-run and produced. There is little administrative supervision. Venues the team has broadcast from include the Chiles Center at the University of Portland, PGE Park in Portland, McArthur Court in Eugene, the Rose Garden Arena in Portland, and Autzen Stadium in Eugene.

Laker Broadcasting traveled to New York City in January, 2006 with the Basketball Team to broadcast a game in New Rochelle, NY.

Laker Broadcasting team positions include: Play-by-Play broadcasters, color analysts, reporters, a technical crew, and producers.

Laker Broadcasting has been featured on FOX 12 Oregon, KOIN 6 Oregon, The Oregonian, and the Lake Oswego Review.

On September 5th, 2008, Laker Broadcasting will launch its first-ever sports internet talk show. "The Navy Nation with Greg Talbott" will center around Lake Oswego High School football, with in-depth interviews, previews, analysis, and opinions. Guests from 1080 the FAN, 95.5 The Game, Southern Oregon Sports Talk, The Oregonian, the Lake Oswego Review, and many others are scheduled to appear on the show. It will be broadcast every Friday afternoon from 3-4 pm from Joe's Boathouse, the LOHS student store.

Lake Views

Lake Views is LOHS' student newspaper publication. It publishes a monthly paper solely written by students. Lake Views is printed on broadsheet sized paper and in color.
