Spirit in the Dark is the third studio album by American actress turned singer Lindsay Lohan. The album will feature songs produced by Akon, Bloodshy & Avant, Ne-Yo, J.R. Rotem, Stargate, Sam Sparro [2] and Pharrell who is featured on the first official single, Playground.[3]

Style and themes

In March 2008, Lohan characterized the album as "dance, hip-hop and R&B" [4], and she said, "I want it to be dance ... kind of Kylie Minogue-meets-Rihanna" [5]. According to Lohan, she was unsure if she wanted the album to feature lyrics that refer to her personal life over the past year: "I think the past is the past and it should be kept there. It's a new slate for me, and I want to show that in my new record".[5]

History

In February 2008, Lohan said that she would like to work with 50 Cent, Kanye West and—again—Timbaland;[6] later that month, her mother, Dina, said that she was recording the album.[7] In March, Lohan said that "being in the studio again has been really great [...] It's all coming together",[4] and that the album was being recorded in Los Angeles and New York City (where she was recording the third song).[5]

In May 2008, songwriter Ne-Yo said that he and Stargate had contributed to the album, saying: "I gotta admit, we were like ... Lindsay Lohan?' "I mean, I've written for Beyonc[é], Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, Celine Dion and ... Lindsay Lohan? But I will say this; we gave her a quality record and she did a ridiculously fabulous job. I was so shocked I had to call her and apologize for what I was thinking because she did so good. I think the world is gonna be surprised."[8] The same month, Lohan said that the album would feature collaborations with Akon, Pharrell Williams, the aforementioned Ne-Yo and Snoop Dogg. Radio presenter Ryan Seacrest said he had liked what he had heard of the album, and that Lohan "is taking it very seriously. She's working really hard. She's working with great producers."[9] In June, Rolling Stone magazine named Bloodshy & Avant and J.R. Rotem among the album's producers.[3] Christopher "Tricky" Stewart was also confirmed as a producer for two tracks on Spirit in the Dark.[10]

In May, a song written and produced by Ne-Yo and Stargate, "Bossy", was previewed on the internet.[11] Rolling Stone reported in June that the album's first single is "Playground" (featuring Pharrell).[3] DJ Samantha Ronson reportedly aired new tracks from Spirit in the Dark at an exclusive party.[12]

According to Ryan Seacrest, Lohan plans to play the album for the first time on his KIIS-FM radio show.[9]

Lohan talked about the album in a live interview with KIIS-FM and said: "I want people to have a lot of fun with it, I want it to be a fun record" she continued, "It's like my dream record...I don't wanna slack off on it...I wanna put my all into it".[13]

Singles

  • On May 27, 2008; "Bossy" was released as a pre-single/Buzz track off the album. It is Lohan's first single to enter the Hot Dance Club Play chart, and her first #1 hit on this chart.[14][15]
