Please stop adding external links to List of Australians in international prisons; also, messages about vandalism are not appropriate for the article page (neither is calling my edits vandalism, at that). --fvw* 01:40, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Please review the history of the Stephen Sutton entry. You will see then why I have made the notation regarding vandalism. In context, your reverts are indeed vandalism. Please leave the article alone!

There may well have been vandalism, but the article itsself is not the place to mention this. Regarding the link: Wikipedia is not a web directory; the external link may be appropriate for the article about the person in question, but not on the list. --fvw* 01:48, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

List of Australians in foreign prisons

Hi Fvw, please review the history of the cited page and the Stephen Sutton material in particular. A link to Sutton's own page is appropriate for an encyclopaedic entry about Sutton, but links to unrelated sites, specifically http://foreignprisoners.com is not.

Removing valid and pertinent information from a Wikipedia entry is indeed vandalism. Please leave the link to Sutton's own site, set up by his sister Ann Cluse (http://stephensutton.com) intact. I will agree to removal of the information regarding the Page Protection request, but the link to the site set up by Stephen's sister is appropriate.

thanks, Diana Elgar

Wikipedia is not a web directory, nor is it a soapbox to promote your views from. The web link is inappropriate in the list of prisoners article. --fvw* 01:54, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'll agree to removal of the notations in the entry itself about the problems with vandalism. However, the link to the site set up by Sutton's sister (http://stephensutton.com) is appropriate for an encyclopaedic entry about Sutton. It contains specific information which is too in-depth for a Wikipedia entry, but is useful for anyone seeking further information about the matter.

thanks, Diana Elgar

3RR Violation

I have blocked Fvw and you for 24 hours for your 3RR violation here. Please in the future do not edit war. Thanks, Redwolf24 (talk) 02:09, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Redwolf24, thank you for intervening on this matter. I have been looking through Wikipedia for references on the basis for including external links in a Wikipedia entry, without success. Of course, I believe that a link to Sutton's own website is appropriate for an encyclopaedic entry about him. If you can direct me to Wikipedia policy on external links, I would be very grateful. thanks, Diana Elgar

There a lot of places (and I can't remember which place mentions it specifically), but I'd read the manual of style WP:MoS. Remember that if an admin like Fvw reverts you like that to think twice - also just don't blindly revert, try to comprise, please! Ryan Norton T | @ | C 02:27, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ryan, thank you for your comment. I will look through the link you've provided. I have tried to compromise on the material included in the Sutton article, but perhaps not quickly enough. I regret my error. thanks, Diana Elgar

I have done a bit of Wikiresearch on external links and came up with the following information. On http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:External_links it says:

"What should be linked to

  1. Official sites should be added to the page of any organization, person, or other entity that has an official site."

http://stephensutton.com qualifies as an official site. It was put online by Sutton's sister, Ann Cluse, and was done so with the express knowledge and consent of Stephen Sutton himself.

If one does a WHOIS on stephensutton.com, the following information is displayed:

Domain name: stephensutton.com

Registrant Contact:

  stephensutton.com
  Kathryn Gibbons ***************@HOTMAIL.COM)
  08 83819761
  Fax: 08 83819761
  110A Windebanks Road
  Adelaide, South Australia 5159
  AU

Kathyrn (Kate) Gibbons did the physical job of purchasing the web hosting service for stephensutton.com and maintains the body text content, specifically on the request of Ann Cluse. Ann Cluse asserts copyright to and thus ownership of the material on stephensutton.com - see the copyright notation on the footer of every page on that site. There is no question that this site is thus 'official,' and contains authoritative information from the principals.

I believe I have made a good case for the inclusion of a link in the Stephen Sutton entry to http://stephensutton.com on the basis of the official nature of the site and Wikipedia's policies for inclusion of official links. I would very much appreciate someone adding this link to the entry.
