Chemperi, the small, calm, and prosperous town resting on the lap of the Western Ghat is the land of rubber and spices, beautiful hillocks, daring and loving people, serene and vibrant streams and ever cherishing dreams. Built in the bank of Chemperi River, the land served as the epic center of people migrating from Travancore to the north districts of Kerala.

HISTORY

The modern history of this town starts with the arrival of migrants from Kottayam District of Kerala during the 1930s. The hard work of the migrants made Chemperi a big town with almost all the facilities to meet the basic needs of its population. Now the town has become a hub of action.

ECONOMY

The mainstay of the people of this place ia agricultue. With the hike in price of rubber, the economic condition of most of the families have improved. The main crops grown are rubber, coconut, pepper, cashew, tapioca, arecanut, and other plantation crops.

Rubber occupies the largest area among plantation crops. Next to rubber, coconut is the most popular crop. Cashew is yet another important plantation. Arecanut stands in the fourth place Among spices, pepper occupies an important place. Pepper is mostly grown as an intercrop with coconut, arecanut and various fruit trees. In the hilly surroundings of Chemperi like Nellikutty and Areekamala, the inter-cultivation is done with rubber and cashew. But now the scene is slowly changing. Now a number of youngsters seek employment in gulf countries and in other cities of India. With the establishment of Vimal Jyoti Engineering colleg at Chemperi, the education scenario of Chemperi has got a facelift.

CLIMATE

Chemperi has a humid climate with an oppressive hot season from March till the end of May. This is followed by the South-West monsoon which continues till the end of September. October and November are the months for the North East Monsoon or Thulamazha. It is very pleasant in December, January and Febrauary.

TOURISM

Paithal Mala is one of the tourist attractions near Chemperi. It is a hillstation near Kudianmala. This hill is on the Kerala-Karnataka border and is 65 km north of Kannur. The place is ideal for trekking,and adventure tourism. That is why it is marked as a spot for adventure tourism by the Department of Touris, Government of Kerala. It is around 1,450 metres above sea level. There is a base reception centre at Pottamplavu and a watchtower atop the cliff for the benefit of tourists and trekkers. Tourist visit this spot round the year. Most of the tourists are youngsters who feel like spending a few hours breathing fresh air keepipng themselves away from the madding crowd of the cities.

EDUCATION

Nirmala Lower Primary School is the first educational institution in Chemperi. It was founded in 1950 by the Parish of Chemperias a fulfilment of the wish of the migrant fathers. The school was being managed by the parish of Chemperi.But later the Diocese started a Corporate Educational Agency and the school became a part of it. In 1953 Nirmala High School was established. This was the first high school in the Migrant areas. Students from Alakode, Chandanakkampara, Paisakkari,nellikutty, Pottamplavu, Kudianmala, Vellad, Vayattuparamba got educated from this school. In 1998 the High School was upgraded to a Higher Secondary School catering to the needs of all the people in and around Chemperi. This was yet another feather on the cap of Chemperi. This was the first Higher Secondary in the Migrant area. There is a network of government schools, corporate schools and CBSE schools in and around Chemperi. With the setting up of Vimaljyothi Engineering College in Jyothinagar Chemperi in 2002, Chemperi has become a center of professional education in Kerala. Run by the Archdiocese of Tellichery, it is ranked among the premium engineering colleges in Kerala. It is one of the premier institutes of technology in Malabar.Msgr Mathew M Chalil, the Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Tellicherry is the Manager of the college. Recently the college has been ranked as one of the A grade colleges in Kerala.

HEALTH

Vimala Hospital, Chemperi is the major healthcare provider in Modern Medicine here. In this hospital all the advanced medical treatments except emergency management are available. The Resident Medical Officer in this Hospital is Dr.Sivakumar MBBS.

TRANSPORT

Chemperi has a wide network of roads. Hill Highway, the prestigious road of Kerala Passes through Chemperi. There are well-maintained roads connecting Taliparamba, Iritty, Alakode, Cherupuzha Kudianmala, Vaithalmala etc. The upcoming Kannur International Airport is just 45km away from Chemperi. The nearest railway station is Kannur and it is 56 Kilomeres away from Chemperi. The nearest port is Mangalore. Eruvessy which is very near to Chemperi town has a historical backgournd. It is believed that the inhabitants of that place has been there even in the eighteenth century. The culture and belief system of the people of Eruvessy is entirely different from that of the people of Chemperi. But still they live in harmony.
