Deep Run High School (DRHS, Deep Run, DR) is named after Deep Run School in celebration of Henrico County Public Schools' 300 year old tradition of excellence in education. Deep Run High School was one of the earliest schools in Henrico County, Virginia; the original structure can be found on the grounds of Short Pump Elementary School.[1] Located at 4801 Twin Hickory Road in Short Pump, the Far West End suburb of Richmond, Deep Run's district encompasses several neighborhoods in the area including Twin Hickory (in which the school resides), Wyndham, Wellesley, and Fox Hall. Deep Run's biggest rival is Mills E. Godwin High School. The two schools compete in annual competitions in football (The West End Brawl), baseball and basketball, always drawing the highest attendance.
History
Deep Run High School was named after one of Henrico County's first schools: Deep Run School.[2] Deep Run School was a two-room schoolhouse that can still be found on the grounds of Short Pump Elementary School. Deep Run High School is a celebration of Henrico County's 300th year of excellence.
In 2002, Deep Run opened its doors solely to freshmen and sophomores as the newest member of Henrico County's public schools. While freshmen entered from neighboring middle schools (Short Pump Middle School and Pocahontas Middle School), incoming sophomores predominantly transferred from John Randolph Tucker High School. Deep Run reached full capacity during its 2004-2005 academic year and graduated its first class on June 16, 2005.
In 2007, Deep Run became overcrowded due to increased build up of surrounding areas. To alleviate the problem, during the summer of 2008, six trailers were placed on school property for the 2008-2009 school year. They will remain on school property until the a new high school in the Glen Allen area is constructed.
Dr. Aaron Spence, Deep Run's first principal, resigned during the summer of 2008 to take over as Director of Curriculum in Chesterfield County. Former Head Football Coach Lenny Pritchard was named acting principal for the 2008-2009 school year until a more comprehensive search can be completed.

Extracurricular activities
Deep Run High School offers many extracurricular activities to its students. These clubs meet on a regular basis. Some prominent clubs in the Deep Run Community include: Page Turners, a club that meets and discusses books; Technology Student Association, a club that meets at regional, state, and national levels to compete in the different fields of technology, Students Against Destructive Decisions, a club that is aimed at promoting safe choices in life; Choice Club, a Christian club that meets in the morning; and Key Club, a club that promotes community service.
Deep Run High School clubs not only have prominence in the school, but also at the state, national, and global levels. Deep Run High School's Technology Student Association chapter (TSA) has four members on the State Executive Council.[4] Deep Run has the most representation on the 15 person council. Deep Run High School's Key Club has one of the biggest chapters in the world.
Deep Run also has many student-created clubs. Some examples are the Japanese Club, Guitar Club, Whit Club, and Cooking Club. The club leaders took the initiative to create a club from their own interests. Although they do not have a state or national level, student-created clubs still are important to the Deep Run community.
Co-curricular activities
Deep Run Marching Wildcats
The Deep Run Marching Band has become well known in the few years that it has been in existence. They have been named a VBODA Virginia Honor Band since the year after the band's formation while the band was under the direction of Frank Chlorie, giving it a five-year streak. Twice competing at Bands of America at Townson University, they made finals in 2008. The Deep Run Marching Wildcat Band has several staff members and is currently directed by Jaraun M. Ransome.
Deep Run High School has also obtained the Blue Ribbon School award for music two years in a row now, which involves all music programs getting superior ratings at state festivals.
Blue Cheese Robotics
Since Deep Run opened it has been home to FIRST Robotics Team 1086. Blue Cheese Robotics participates in the FIRST Robotics competition. Tucker and Deep Run teamed up to build the 2008 robot. FIRST is an international non-profit organization, inspiring and exciting students about science and technology futures. Over 6 years, the team has won 9 awards, including winning the Regional Competition and Regional Chairman's Award in 2007-08. Along with just building robots, the team is highly active in the community, and is highly beneficial to members. Students experience what has been described as "21st Century Education", learning in a free and fun environment with their friends and peers. This program is proven helpful for students, with 100% of 2007-08 graduates receiving scholarships, and going on to be very successful college students, and adults.
Orchestra
Deep Run has two string orchestras conducted by William Raposo. In 2007 and 2008, the orchestra competed in local festivals and received straight superior ratings (the highest honor possible). In March 2007, the orchestra traveled to Chicago, Illinois to compete in a national festival. The orchestra received a gold medal and a second place overall finish. In April 2008, the ensemble came first place in its division and won overall orchestral champion in Atlanta, Georgia.
Vocal Music
There are several student choirs at Deep Run which meet as a class during school, consisting of Cantate (advanced women's select choir), Voce Unificato (larger select women's choir), Belle Voci (advanced select mixed choir), Sound Steps (select show choir), and Cantar Bellamente (large non-select mixed choir). There also exist choirs which meet outside of class, including a women's quartet, a men's quartet, and a mixed quintet.
Deep Run's choirs have performed all over the country and consistently earned superior ratings at competitions and festivals nationwide [citation needed]. Cities of competition include Boston, Atlanta, Nashville, New York, and Orlando.
Drama
The Deep Run drama department is officially known as the Out of the Woods Theater Company, in honor of the school's first ever musical, Into the Woods, which ran in April 2003.
Deep Run offers four levels of Theater Arts classes (Theater Arts I, II, III, and IV, IV being for honors credit) for students as well as a stagecraft class, which is new for the 2006-2007 year. Within class, students study acting, playwriting, directing, technical theater, and theater history, the subject matter often depending upon whatever level the students are currently in.
Each school year, the Drama Department puts on a fall play, a spring musical, and a night of one-act plays in the winter (January or February). The drama department is also in charge of organizing the annual talent night in May and the annual Mr. Deep Run pageant in February or March. In the past, they have also put on various dinner theaters in the fall and spring.

They were replaced by former Godwin High School Assistant Greg Kendall, who went 6-5 in his first year.

Traditions
Class Ring
Students at Deep Run High School have the option of purchasing a class ring in their sophomore year. These rings are purchased from Herff-Jones, the company that created the Super Bowl rings for the Super Bowl XLI champions. Deep Run's class rings normally come with two pridesides. One side is the Deep Run Wildcat logo, and the other is picked by the student to represent an activity of the student's choice.
Marathon Dance
The Marathon Dance is a 27 hour event hosted at the school to benefit charities. Deep Run's Marathon Dance was based on the coordinator's (Ms. Kathleen Bushman) own high school's marathon dance, in South Glens Falls, New York. The dance requires all students to raise at least $100 to participate, and it offers a safe, supervised, and fun weekend long activity for the students and is also a way for students to earn up to 27 hours of community service. During the dance, the students dance and participate in different costume themes, games, several AIR-BANDS, and even a toga rave at 1:30 a.m.
In 2007, Deep Run hosted its first annual Marathon Dance to benefit the Autism Society of America. It was a huge success when the student body raised over $70,000.
In 2008, Deep Run hosted its second annual Marathon Dance to benefit a group of charities submitted by community members and voted on by a student committee.
