iGeneration is a term used to describe the generation born primarily in the mid-to-late 1980s, (1986-1990). The name is based on the popular iPod music device. The term was popularized by MC Lars in his song iGeneration, although previously used elsewhere to describe the internet generation, or a digital generation. [1]

Music

The musical genres most commonly associated with this generation are rap and emo.

Movies

The movies most popular amongst members of iGeneration include the works of Generation X directors such as Quentin Tarantino and Kevin Smith, as well as 1980s teen movies such as The Lost Boys and the 80s output of The Breakfast Club director John Hughes.

Television

TV programs that seem most popular amongst this generation include MTV shows like Pimp My Ride and Punk'd, as well as a range of cult shows. Examples include animated comedy shows like Family Guy and the likes of Aqua Teen Hunger Force from Cartoon Network's "Adult Swim" programming block. However, it has been said that members of iGeneration actually watch 60% less television than members of past generations. This is largely attributed to the popularity of the internet.

The Internet

Those born in the late 1980s are said to have grown up with the internet, as its explosion of popularity has occurred during their lifetimes. Due to compulsory school education on computer use and being the first generation to enjoy wide-spread home internet access, the iGeneration are characterised as being far more net-savvy than older generations. This is reflected in the popularity of peer-to-peer file sharing networks to facilitate the illegal download of music and movie files amongst this generation, as well as the use of modern communication tools like instant messaging software. Sites like MySpace and LiveJournal are also commonly associated with members of iGeneration, and they have been attributed to creating a global community populated by those born in the late 80s. More than ever before, trends and cliques are defined more by tastes in music and sub-cultures (like those associated with emo and rap) than geography. The internet means that once a trend gains popularity in one country, it can quickly be appropriated by people living in other countries, whereas in the past trends took longer to spread beyond borders.
