"I Stay in Love" is a song written by Mariah Carey, Bryan-Michael Cox, Kendrick "Wyldcard" Dean, and Adonis Shropshire for Carey's eleventh studio album, E=MC². Produced by Carey and Cox, it was released as the album's fourth single.
Release
"I Stay in Love" went for adds at U.S. Top 40/Mainstream and Rhythm/Crossover radio on October 28, 2008.[1] The song is available at Itunes.[2] There has not been an official cd single release date yet.
Critical reception
Critical reviews of the song were very positive. In its review of E=MC², The online edition of The Republican said that Carey "shines" on the song[3], while Fox News described it as "a killer ballad".[4] People named it the best ballad on the album, calling it "pretty".[5] The Houston Chronicle described the single as a "gently grooving ballad that Janet Jackson should be recording" and that "Carey effortlessly hits [the notes] at the end of the song".[6].The Los Angeles Times gave the song a mixed review, stating that "I Stay in Love" was "unadorned, and her voice is almost leathery in the lower notes. It's not flattering, but it rings true emotionally."[7].Entertainment Weekly said the song is "a slower, less addictive variation on "We Belong Together".[8]
Promotion
Carey performed the song live as well as a special performance of Hero with the conteststants on November 8, 2008 on "The X Factor" in the United Kingdom. As people say, Mariah gave one of her most astonishing live performances ever, even though a mic problem caused a high pitched noise as Mariah belted out her big notes (some people think this was Mariah's voice itself although it definately was not). After performing on "The X Factor" five of Mariah's songs entered the itunes top 100 in the UK including I Stay In Love as well as Anytime You Need A Friend, Without You, All I Want For Christmas Is You and her original version of Hero, some of the songs performed on the night by her and the remaining contestants.[9]
Music video
Directed by Carey's husband Nick Cannon, the music video for "I Stay in Love" was filmed in Las Vegas, Nevada, using a story line that Cannon and Carey co-wrote.[10]. Carey filmed the video on October 5, 2008, at The Bank Nightclub of The Bellagio Hotel and Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.[11][12][13].Carey continued to shoot the video on October 6, 2008 in the Nevada desert. In an interview with Ryan Seacrest, Cannon spoke about the video and said that there is a scene where Carey is in bed with a man played by Andrew Karelis, and that "Mariah plays the showgirl and there's a guy who cheated and there's flashbacks.....".[14]
The music video for "I Stay In Love" was featured on BET's Access Granted for a behind-the-scenes look and a world premiere on Monday, October 27, 2008 at 7:30pm ET.[15] The entire video was shown every hour on BET until 7:00pm on Tuesday, October 28, 2008. The video peaked at #6 on BET's 106 & Park "Top 10 Live" countdown.
The video was shown in black-and-white, and it features Carey as a Las Vegas showgirl coping with the loss of her lover to another.
