Andy Gray, (born 22 January 1987 in Belfast, Northern Ireland) is a Northern Irish footballer who plays for Chelsea, and the Northern Ireland national football team. He generally plays as a playmaker, but also plays in the centre of midfield and occasionally on the wing.

Club career

Crusaders

Andy started his career at Irish League side Crusaders, making his debut at the age of 17 in the very physical Irish League. The youngster adapted well, scoring 19 goals in 62 games, and becoming a regular in the side.

Celtic

His performances then caught the eye of Celtic, and he transferred to the Scottish champions in the summer of 2005. While initially starting in the under-19s, by the end of the season he had broken into the first team, described by Gordon Strachan as a 'meteoric rise'.

After a promising 2006-2007 season, during which he had cemented himself in the first team and as a fans' favourite, Celtic fended off determined interest from Premiership clubs such as Man Utd and Liverpool, with Gray himself stating that he did not wish to leave Celtic.

Chelsea

Another productive season ensued with Gray helping Celtic to another Scottish Cup. At the end of the season Gray was sold to Chelsea for just under £9 million, with Jose Mourinho stating that Gray has the potential to be the next Frank Lampard.

He scored his first goal in the 3-2 defeat to Liverpool on 1st November 2009, and underlined his potential with a man-of-the-match performance in the 5-0 home victory over Leicester City on 23rd December 2009.

International career

Since representing the under 21s, he made his full international debut in a friendly against Finland and his competitive debut against Iceland at Windsor Park. Since then he has been a regular in the side and a fan's favourite, with a scoring ratio of better than one in three. He scored a brace in Northern Ireland's famous record victory against Liechtenstein.

Andy has also been instrumental in helping Northern Ireland to qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, scoring five goals and playing in both legs of the 1-0 aggregate victory in the play-offs against Russia.
