Title of the series

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny is the second TV series set in the Cosmic Era universe of Gundam. Set two years after the original Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, Gundam SEED Destiny features many new characters and some returning ones (most prominently Kira Yamato, Athrun Zala, Lacus Clyne, and Cagalli Yula Athha, but the majority of the surviving Gundam SEED cast appears in some capacity).

Gundam SEED Destiny had its premiere broadcast in Japan on October 9, 2004 at 6:00 PM on the JNN TV stations (Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS TV), Mainichi Broadcasting System (MBS TV, producing TV station), etc.) and ended October 1, 2005. The series consists of 50 episodes. Bandai Entertainment has announced that Gundam SEED Destiny is licenced for the North American market. It was noted that Gundam SEED Destiny will also have a forty minute OVA (Original Video Animation) as a final conclusion to this fifty episode series. However, recent reports at GUNOTA have stated that the 40 minute OVA has been removed from the final detail releases of the DVD.

English Version

The English version of DESTINY, like that of the original SEED (as well as the original Gundam, CCA, Wing, and EW), is being done by the Ocean Studios in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Dullindal's and Stellar's names have been changed to Durandal and Stella (check Gilbert's article to see the Dullindal/Durandal connection, and Stellar's name was originally Stella, until about Episode 10, when they changed it; granted, since the Japanese don't have the letter "r" in their tongue, they couldn't pronounce it anyway, so it really didn't make that much of a difference). The voices, so far as can be told, include:

Returning cast members, as well as a few other characters) are expected to reprise their original roles/similar ones:

Trivia

There is a strong resemblance between the Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam series in Universal Century and Gundam SEED Destiny in many aspects. This is apparent in the mobile suit designs (for example the similarity between Psyco Gundam and the Destroy, Hyaku Shiki and Akatsuki), and also the character developments and plots, such as the return of the protagonists from the previous series (Amuro Ray/Kira Yamato), the manipulations of body and mind of the Cyber Newtypes/Extended, and the doomed romantic relationships between the protagonists and female mobile suit pilots of the enemy. But it lacks the death rate of characters seen in Zeta Gundam. Another major difference is that while both feature the protagonists from the previous series, the former protagonist (Kira) seems to be shown even more than the new protagonist (Shinn). This is especially true in the last ten to twelve episodes, when Shinn is more or less completely overshadowed by Kira. Another similarity to Zeta Gundam is how the protagonists and antagonists have their final encounter.

Gundam-to-Gundam voice actors

  • Yzak Joule = Domon Kasshu (G Gundam)
Talia Gladys = Kycilia Zabi (Mobile Suit Gundam)
Gilbert Dullindal = Char Aznable (Mobile Suit Gundam)
Neo Lorrnoke = Zechs Merquise (Gundam Wing), Gym Ghngnham (Turn A Gundam)
Andrew Waltfeld = Treize Khrushrenada (Gundam Wing)
Rey Za Burrel = Duo Maxwell (Gundam Wing), Rau Le Creuset (Gundam SEED)

Criticism

Many have criticized the show for replacing the main cast for the cast of Gundam SEED, ripping off Zeta Gundam's storyline, recycled animation, rehashed storylines, complete forgetfulness of the Earth Alliance in the story and the "shafting" of the new ZAFT Characters in favour of the old ORB Cast. The "overpowered" one-sidedness of many fights has also suffered frequent complaints, especially the last episode when Shinn, the supposed protagonist, is shot down by Athrun Zala in a very short time span. Some hardcore fans also blame Fukuda for being lazy, while he recycled the same sequence used in Gundam SEED, he didn't even bother to change some of the anime (i.e. Strike replacing Impulse in episode 29 for 3 seconds and Freedom appear in place of Strike Freedom in the last episode). Some fans also blame Fukuda for changing storyline just to sell the related products (i.e. Plastic Model) while ignoring the overall synergy of the storyline (Hence the "good-looking" Gundams). The design of MS also faced a great deal of criticism as well. First, ZAKU Warrior/ZAKU Phantom, GOUF Ignited, and DOM Trooper is nothing other than an attempt to put the original 3 Zeon mobile suits into the Cosmic Era. Furthermore, Impulse is almost a straight copy off Strike in Gundam SEED, and some even say that its design copies Stardust Memory's GP-01; Strike Freedom, Infinite Justice and Legend Gundams are little more than upgrades of their respective counterparts in the original Gundam SEED (Freedom, Justice, Providence); Akatsuki, while the looks resemble Hyaku Shiki from Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, also copies the "Fin Funnel Barrier" used by Amuro's Nu Gundam in Char's Counterattack. Strike Freedom has also been criticized by some as little more than an upgrade of Amuro Ray's Hi-Nu Gundam. Destiny is known for a "mix" of everything - with its "Hikari no Tsubasa" (from the Victory 2 Gundam from Mobile Suit Victory Gundam), and a Palm Cannon, obviously inspired by the "Shining Finger" from Mobile Fighter G Gundam.

Another major problem fans had with the series was the amount of recaps shown in the series in the wrong place at the wrong time. In total there were about 4 recaps but there were other episodes in the series that many fans have pointed out to be useless and unnecessary. An example of this would be the episode where the group mourns over the death of Meer, the fake Lacus, when it could've been used to set up for the final battle.

It is believed that a sequel of Gundam SEED Destiny is to be announced soon, to create a trilogy of the Gundam SEED Series in the Cosmic Era. Rumor has it that it will be called Mobile Suit Gundam SEED: Eternity, and that three characters from Gundam SEED Destiny will be returning.

It was originally confirmed that a Gundam SEED Destiny OVA will be released with the release of the final Gundam SEED Destiny DVD in Japan. It will be 40 minutes long and hopefully can tie up some loose ends in the plot. But later it has also been comfirmed that the OVA has been removed from the final DESTINY DVD in Japan according to GUNOTA.
