Free State Danzig
Doesn't this belong under Gdansk? And a lot of the below sounds anti-Polish, and suffers from an excessive use of German.
I suggest removing this page, almost all information it contains is also on Gdansk, and it was Free City not Free State anyway --Taw
Frei Staat Danzig or Free State Danzig was the name of the city of Danzig and the Danziger Land , is situated within the stretch of land , which was "given" to Poland with the Treaty of Versailles.
The Freistaat Danzig came officially under the League of Nations with partial control by
Poland. Citizens of Danzig were made separate citizens from Prussia Germany , or Deutsche Reich.
The stretch of land they found themselfes in became known as the "Polish Corridor".
The newly created Poland, besides having received the gift of the "Polish Corridor" in the north-west, added another huge chunk of land from Ukraine in the east.
To the west of Danzig at the Baltic Sea Poland now built a huge military harbor at the formerly tiny fishing village of Gdingen , called Gdynia by Poles .
The city of Danzig , the resort town of Zoppot and the small fishing village of Gdingen are situated in very close vicinity and had been administered as one unity. The Treaty of Versailles split Western Prussia into several sections. Danzig became Free State Danzig under League of Nations (forrunner of U.N.) and included Zoppot ,called Sopot in Polish. It severed Gdingen and made it a part of the "Polish Corridor".
In Danzig and Gdingen/Gdynia Poland also built up the Polish military and used the Danzig harbor as a large ammunition depot. Danzig burgers opposed this.
Danzig Westerplatte is the place , where a show-down was called.
