George Chinnery

George Chinnery (錢納利) was an English painter spending most his life in Asia, especially India and southern China. He was born on 5th January 1774 in London.

He learnt painting in England and became a famous portrait painter in Ireland by 1802. He married with Marianne on 19th April, 1799 in Dublin, Ireland.

George Chinnery ran into debt later and went to India in 1802. He then became famous painter again in the India. He again left India in 1825 for debt and went to southern China. He travelled around the Pearl River Delta, between Macao and Canton (now Guangzhou). He had been to Hong Kong after British seizing the city and got sick. Later he died in Macao.

He left a lot of pictures about early half 19th Century in Pearl River Delta, depicting the life and landscape in the area of the era.
