AdventureQuest is a free online one player RPG that was developed by Artix Entertainment in 2002. The system requirements for the game are a web browser and version 7.0 or later of Macromedia Flash Player. The game is free of cost, but for a one time donation, players can acquire Guardian or X-Guardian status, allowing them to acquire certain in-game perks and features not available to other players.
The game and its costs are entirely supported by player donations, so a limit has been established for the maximum number of Adventurers (non-Guardian players) that can be playing the game simultaneously. However, guardians are allowed to bypass this limit and log in whenever they like, and new players are also allowed this privilege, for their first 5 logins.
Guardians are allowed to play ArchKnight, another RPG based loosely off AdventureQuest; as well as Zardwars, which is a "mod" created to test multiple databases. Guardians also have a separate server which is used for testing possible changes to the game and participating in special game events open only to Guardians.
Gameplay
The game itself plays much like any other turn based RPG; the player has a menu with several commands his or her character can perform. These include attacking with the current weapon, using spells, drinking potions for restoring health/mana, changing equipment, and selecting pets. Guest characters can also be obtained and will help you in battle.
In the game there are eight elements, as opposed to the classical four found in most games. These elements are: Fire, Water, Wind, Ice, Earth, Energy, Light, and Darkness. Both monsters and players have elemental resistance towards each element, and all attacks and spells of that element. For example, a player could run into a Djinni, which takes 130% damage from ice attacks. Since the Djinni's attacks are fire, the player equips himself with an armor and a shield for best possible protection against fire, and arms himself with an ice weapon for most damage.
Not only do all attacks have an element but also a type: Ranged, Melee, or Magic. Both monsters and players have different blocking values against each type. The player can change his or her blocking values by switching armors and shields, which the monster cannot do. Another important difference is the random damage bonus that depends on player statistics. The random damage bonus is calculated by the following:
- Melee Damage
- strength/8
- Ranged Damage
- strength/16 + dexterity/16
- Magic Damage
- intellect/8
The random damage bonus is added to the weapon's random damage (max damage - min damage), and is such not a guarantee for doing more damage. For example, a character with 80 intellect using Trident of Etain, which is a magic weapon with 15 random damage, gets a 10 boost to the random damage, making it 25.
In order to increase stats, players must challenge the stat trainers. There are three total each holding a different form of training, cost, and stats to train. Thus, two main groups of players have formed: mages and warriors. Warriors focus on training strength, while mages train intellect. Naturally, rounded characters with about equal intellect and strength (known as hybrids) exist, as do Rangers who train dexterity. Rangers are rarely played due to a shortage of strong ranged-supporting equipment.
Classes
In AdventureQuest, classes are gained by completing missions for NPC's. You can advance up to level 5 (half-way) in a class for non-guardian (Adventurer) characters and all the way to level 10 as a Guardian or Master X-Guardain.
Each level you gain in a class gives you special abilities, such as bonuses to defence or elelental resistance, extra damage to cetrain monsters (dragons or undead for dragon or vampire slayers) or the powerful Ninja Death Strike.
Generally every class has two or three defensive abilities, six or seven offensive powers and a level 10 attack which causes huge damage. The most well-known of these are Ninja DeathStrike, which has a one-in-five chance of dealing 300 damage, and dragonslayer class' Call Forth the Fire Dragon (Called CFTFD in the game community). CFTFD must be charged by using 90 dragonslayer attacks, then deals huge damage to the enemy it is unleashed upon.
You can be any level in any class, and there is no limit on how many classes you may take, but only one can be active at a time due to class armours. In Adventurequest, a character can own 8 different types of armour, and to use class ablites you must wear the correct armour. You can sell a class armour and buy it back later, at a loss, but your class levels are permanent once gained.
The abilities you gain by training in these classes can only be used when you are equipped with the related class armor. Defence boosting abilities are passive, they take effect whenever you wear class armour, while those that deal damage cost [[MP]Mana points] to use. The currently available classes are Dragon Slayer, Vampire Slayer, Mage, Fighter, Ninja, Rogue, and Knight, but many more are planned, such as Dracomancer and Wizard.
Races
At present you may only be a human, but in the future you will be able to play as other races. You can get armors known as "Forms" to simulate a change in race. As of this writing the form armors include Dwarf Form, Twilly Form, Lilliputian Form, Giant Form, Minotaur Form, Troll Form, Giant Head Form, Martial Artist Form, Samurai Form, Werewolf Form, Vampire Form, Lycan, Vamp, Werepyre Form, Blob Form, Necromancer Form, Frogzilla Form, Drakel Form, Zombie Form, Canine Warrior, Ninja Form and Dragon Form.many other races are inclued
Sub-Races
Sub-races are similar to classes in that you must wear a special armor to access the abilities you have gained. Currently there are three sub-races: Werewolf, Vampire, and Werepyre. Vampires can morph into the Vampire Lord and attack multiple times, and heal hp around 20% damage dealt, and Werewolves can do the same and morph into the Alpha Wolf. Whilst the Werepyre (Half Werewolf, Half Vampire) just attacks 2 times with increased damage for both attacks and recover 5 hp each time. You must be a Werepyre to utilize the 2 hit-attack. On the other hand, if you're not a Werepyre, you can still use the armor, but not access the two hit attack. Some staff members do have other subraces which have no practical function. These include 'Moron' and 'Golem'.
Wars
As well as random encounters and quest battling, there are sometimes events called wars. These are server-wide events that call for a certain amount of monsters to be defeated before moving on to a boss battle. If a player defeats the boss he/she may be able to claim a rare war prize. In the past players did not actually have to slay the boss to get the rare prize. The matter was resolved by implementing a system where items are purchased from what is known as a "War Chest" only after the boss is killed. Weapons are the most common items. They often do more damage than weapons available normally or have other advantages, such as powerful specials.
Several new war methods are in testing, including a manually updated percentage bar, and a quest-style war where there is no waiting bar for the boss. Both of these sell the rewards directly in the shop. Some wars have had a limited time to be completed for the rewards to be made available.
The most recent war was the Attack of Carnax. Carnax was a massive beast which was accidentaly re-awakened by the Drakel people. Several months of storyline preceded this event, and once Carnax attacked it was fought like a war, with it's body-parts being attacked as individual monsters and the victory percentage indiciating Carnax's overall health.
Mini-Games
There are mini-games in the Battleon website. Currently there are two: Zardwars and ArchKnight. Guardians have access to these games at all times, while Adventures can only play these games when Adventure Quest is under maintenance. Guardians can access ZardWars from http://zardwars.battleon.com, and ArchKnight from http://www.archknight.com ====weapons===you are given a large selection of weapons to buy at shops and in chests. There are level requirements as to what you can use and not.
Spells
Well, what can Rpg's do without magic? Spells have requirements too and certain ones can heal you.
DragonFable
Artix Entertainment is expected to release a new game, DragonFable, as the follow-up to AdventureQuest. The Beta Version of DragonFable is expected to be released to guardians in November 2005, adventurers will have to wait until the full release of the game is out. Please go to http://www.dragonfable.com for more information on this new game.
Community
AdventureQuest has two IRC channels located on the Caelestia network. The channel for talking about the game itself is #battleon, while an off topic chat for the community is located in #Yulgarsinn. The official message board for AdventureQuest players is located at http://forums2.battleon.com/f/.
Clans
There are currently three official clans in AdventureQuest. One is used to mark who are the staff members ("AdventureQuest Team" clan), one to show who has cheated or abused the game ("Cheaters/Abusers/Time Wasters" clan), and one specifically for test characters. Other than these, there are no official in-game clans, however several large clans exist on the AdventureQuest message board. It's a place where you can enjoy yourself and become a part of a community. It is quite common for two smaller clans to join together to become a large clan, a process called merging.
Miscellaneous
On Friday 9th September 2005, a quest relating to the Leeroy Jenkins phenomenon has been implemented. Leeroy Jenkins is a craze that originated in World of Warcraft, when a Paladin called Leeroy ran ahead, luring hundreds of monsters to the main party, butchering a very well planned operation.
