Status quo

Status Quo Ante Erat: Literally "the state of things as it was before", usually used in the short form status quo, meaning the current, existing state of affairs.

Sometimes there is a policy of deliberate ambiguity, referring to the status quo rather than formalizing the status, see Political status of Taiwan.
