Laughter for chickens
Chris: Just wanted to let you know that even though "kuram na smekh" is a more accurate transliteration, "kooram nah smech" is the way it's written in the published Serenity script book. Dunno which is preferable on the page, though: see Talk:Serenity (film)#Simon's safeword phrase. Oh, and thanks for keeping an eye out for our anonymous friend! —Josiah Rowe 00:26, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
Darfur Map
Dear ChrisO
I write you from the Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team (EAAF) regarding a map of Sudan uploaded by you that we would like to include in our 2005 Annual Report. The map illustrates the Darfur conflict in Sudan and may be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Darfur_map.png. Is it possible to get a JPEG image sent to us of the map at over 1000 KB (2500 X 1800)? The image is too blurry when resized.
Our organization was founded in 1984 and is a non-governmental, non-profit, organization that applies forensic sciences - mainly forensic anthropology and archaeology- to the investigation of human rights violations worldwide. It was established to investigate the cases of disappeared people in Argentina during the last military government (1976-1983). Over the past 20 years, the team has worked in 35 countries in Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe.
As part of our forensic work on human rights cases, each year we publish a basic overview of the human rights context for the countries in which we worked. You can also find more information about EAAF at our web site, www.eaaf.org. Approximately one thousand copies will be printed for distribution at no charge to NGOs, academics, truth commissions, international tribunals, local judiciaries, families of the disappeared, and others interested in the work.
The map contribution will be greatly appreciated. You may also include in the email the name and organization that you would like to be credited in our report. I can be reached at this email address or via phone at (718) 237.2028. Thank you, once again.
Sincerely, Felicia Madimenos
- Felicia,
- Unfortunately I don't have that image at a higher resolution. I created it by overlaying this detailed UN map on top of this public domain CIA map, then tracing the boundaries of the Darfur provinces onto the CIA map. If you want a higher resolution image, I suggest that you use the UN map, though you will need to ask permission to do so (see http://www.un.org/Depts/Cartographic/english/about.htm ). -- ChrisO 20:27, 19 October 2005 (UTC)
AFV photos
I'm going to keep pestering you to make a complete list or a Wikipedia:gallery of your AFV photos. They're great, and I'd like to be able to browse through the whole bunch. (If you don't get around to it, I just may do it myself) —Michael Z. 2005-10-19 22:59 Z

Vitruvius says of himself that he's an old man
This must sound rather odd coming from the guy who put Vitruvius online, but where does he say that? (A true question, by the way: I didn't notice it and can't find it, but that would hardly be the first time I missed something. On the other hand, it would also not be the first time that some secondary interpretation crept into the lore about a historical figure — safer to check.) Best, Bill 23:11, 20 October 2005 (UTC)
- The source is Encyclopaedia Britannica: "Since Vitruvius describes himself as an old man, it may be inferred that he was also active during the time of Julius Caesar." If it can't be confirmed it's probably best taken out... -- ChrisO 23:24, 20 October 2005 (UTC)
- Hmm. Even the venerable 1911 Britannica occasionally nods. Vitruvius' sole surviving work is the De architectura, and I can't find such a statement in there. I'm removing it, by commenting it out. If we find something in there that can be interpreted that way, we can always put it back. Bill 12:02, 22 October 2005 (UTC)
I came to invite you to join the other admins who are trying to help with M* wikis, I've changed my mind (I guess you'll help them when it's needed), and I thought I should leave a link (since there's no discussion at all on that wiki's talk page). Take care. +MATIA ☎ 14:40, 22 October 2005 (UTC)
Stations box
Hello. I was thinking about "opened as...". Is that what you were thinking of or more detail? Mrsteviec 13:25, 22 October 2005 (UTC)
- I think you'd need more than that; think of stations like Surrey Quays that have gone through multiple renamings. I'd suggest just having a "previous names" line with room for a date range, e.g. "Deptford Road (1884-1911), Surrey Docks (1911-1989)". -- ChrisO 13:30, 22 October 2005 (UTC)
- Ok. Surrey Quays tube station, Dagenham Heathway tube station. How about what I've done here. I'm trying to avoid adding an extra field as you have to go back through all the existing articles adding a blank field item or it comes up with an error in the article. But let me know if you think it needs to be clearer and we can move towards that. Mrsteviec 13:55, 22 October 2005 (UTC)
Deleted articles
I am Bassking8219, and i recently had some articles of mine deleted. I am trying to set up a link of articles about my band and the members in it, so if you could not delete my created articles, i would be very grateful. Wikipedia is cool by the way.
Template:Support
I'm not sure why did you decide to delete the Template:Support without even looking at the talk page. There I explained why is it not eligible for speedy deletion and why those who unilaterally delete it act against the rules of wikipedia (short: that page does not fit in any of the Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion). Could you please take a look at the talk page next time? Halibutt 01:07, 27 October 2005 (UTC)
- There was a clear majority in favour of deletion when the matter was voted on. The talk page makes that quite clear; I tally the vote against as 44 votes to delete against 9 votes to keep. Please cease re-creating the template, as you've done four times already. I've deleted the template again - don't re-create it again, or more drastic action may be necessary. -- ChrisO 07:40, 27 October 2005 (UTC)
Hi Chris, I editted the Republic of Macedonia, changing the name of the state to the officially recognised by the U.N. name Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. The Unighted Nations don't recognise teh simplified from Republic of macedonia for some certain reasons, that neither me or you can question at this point so why don't we just respect the U.N. recognision? Steve
why did you delete the Ani Fiordimondo page?
sorry
I'm sorry for creating forgs, I'm new to wiki.. You are talking about having an anbiased site and you use names and symbols that are not recognised by international organisations (UN, NATO, EU) and you know that they offend millions of people around the world. ok Bush and some(or many or whatever) politicians around the world might do, but they are not international organisations; they also support the war in Iraq, would that make it a legal war, if not the UN? Why so we need the UN then? If the state is finally recognised as Republic of amcedonia, then use the name, I will support its usage and try to convince myself that its the right thing to do, as I respect the Unighted Nations. Before this day, teh unbiased way of describing a state is by using the name that these orginasations recognise and not what Bush and the president of Turkey think its right. Best Regards Steve
i am bassking8219, and you have just deleted my band page. You said "your band is not NOTABLE enough to be on Wikipedia". What is that supposed to mean? Who are you to decide who is important and who is not? You think you are this almighty power, "you are worthless, you don't deserve to be on this website" I've got plenty of people who want my band's page to be up. Wikipedia is a great way for bands to get publicity as well. I tell him, he tells him, and pretty soon lots of people know about us. It's gonna happen, and eventually well be "notable" enough to be on Wikipedia, so just let us in, now. Who cares about "policy", what you are doing is wrong. Everyone is equal under the eyes of god, so start treating them like it.
Problem with User:Theathenae
- Cris, I have a problem with User:Theathenae.
- I did the following edit some days ago: [| from history], but this user keeps reverting me and insisting that "many" should be used instead of "some" in the sentence: "The Republic of Macedonia¤, officially referred to by the United Nations and some countries as the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM)...".
- Also, in talk [[1]] I gave links when you can clearly see that just 16% of the countries recognise Macedonia under some other name than "Republic of Macedonia". Even the countries who use the FYROM refference for us, in the direct contacts with our country use the constitutional name (example: Germany, Netherlands, Italy, Spain etc.). Also, the parlaments of the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy (Greek allies in the EU) already recomended their goverments to recognise the constitutional name of Macedonia.
- Despite this, User:Theathenae keeps pushing his own POV and does not care about the truth.
- I have to stress that this user was already permanently banned at the Swedish Wikipedia for Greek Pov Pushing (as given as a reason). I beleive he is doing this again now, on the English Wikipedia (and probably some other). Please check his history, you will see what I am talking about.
- If you need to contact me, please use my talk page. Thanks
- Macedonian 02:19, 29 October 2005 (UTC)
- Also, having on mind that you are working on the article for the foreign relations of Republic of Macedonia, I would like to remind you that there was another proposal of the United Nations some 20 days ago, a proposal which Greece refused, but Macedonia accepted. Also, a Greek MP of the leading govermental party in Greece had several comments concerning the naming dispute and the non-sence of it, but he was criticised by many other Greek public figures, even called a psichiatrsit case. You can read a little more about this on: [[2]].
- Also, I think that we should include that many people who consider themselves as Macedonians and who are refugees from Greece are not allowed to get back in Greece and are not allowed to ask for their ownings which they have when they were runned away from Greece. On the other hand, the refugees of Greek origin are getting their lands back.
- If you need any assistance about the human rights of the Macedonians (and any other minority) in Greece, please feel free to contact me. I think this might be important, because it plays big (maybe even crutial) part in the naming dispute. Macedonian 02:37, 29 October 2005 (UTC)
Serenity problems, again
Hey, Chris. You were kind enough to look in at Serenity (film), where we have had a persistent anon user (24.7.196.180) pushing his POV, and reverting without explanation. Well, he's back and back at it, except that he's not technically reverting any more (just adding the same information over and over again). Could you take a look at the page and let us know what you think of the situation? Thanks. —Josiah Rowe 06:00, 29 October 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for letting me know. I've blocked him for a 3RR violation, and upped the block time to 48 hours in light of his previous violations of the rule. -- ChrisO 09:04, 29 October 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for handling it, Chris. We'll see if he gets the message this time. —Josiah Rowe 16:46, 29 October 2005 (UTC)
