Steve Hackett (born February 12, 1950) is a musician and virtuoso guitar player. He first gained notoriety, after replacing Anthony Phillips in the British rock group Genesis in 1970. While a member, Steve helped compose and arrange songs, contributing to the band's success. He remained with Genesis for 8 albums, leaving in 1977 to pursue a solo career.

Steve Hackett is best known for his innovative ethereal sounding electric guitar work, and for being one of the pioneers of a technique called tapping. Though many people credit Eddie Van Halen for inventing this technique, it was actually Hackett who first mastered it. He is also known for his expert classical guitar playing.

Hackett's guitar solo in the song Firth of Fifth, from Genesis' 1973 Selling England By The Pound, is considered by many to be one of the greatest guitar solos in the history of rock music.Other great solo's include an intense emotional one on "The Lamia", a song on Genesis' epic "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway". Hackett himself is not particularly fond of his period with Genesis, because he felt he was treading water, and too few of his material appeared on the albums followed by Peter Gabriel's departure from the supergroup. He left after a final album called Seconds Out.

In 1986, Hackett formed the supergroup GTR with ex-Yes and ex-Asia guitarist Steve Howe. Their only album went gold, but Hackett's dissatisfaction with the group's financial management soon spelled the end of the project. While the album was a chart success, it is not a favourite with most fans.

Hackett's subsequent comments on GTR have been ambivalent at best. He once said of the group, "there are artistic limitations with any successful band and it was a successful band." [1]

He resumed his solo career in 1987, and has released numerous solo recordings since then.
