User talk:Wiki alf
Hi Alf
Thanks for saying hello.
I am rather adrift with this different format for discussions. And I screwed up my intro, I noticed: it looks like part of the guy's post above mine. I will try and fix (edit) that, but no guarantees on the immediate results.
Okay. I have learned quite a bit in the last c. hour of experimenting: I fixed the intro, and now I know how to add my user name as a link to my page. The editing tool is most efficient.

Thanks for your support on my RfA. I liked your notice on top and how you use a deletion log instead of archive pages so I stole the idea from you. Thanks :) Qaz (talk) 00:35, 13 October 2005 (UTC)
- I hope your RfA is successfull this time. I'm glad you like the idea of not making pages of what is already available - it seems sensible to do it this way. Alf melmac 05:57, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

My welcome
Wiki alf: I saw your message to Matani2005. I did a little checking and it looks to me like it was done by an anonymous user pretending to be Matani2005. See Special:Contributions:User:82.81.109.104 and Special:Contributions:User:Matani2005. My welcome is listed on the former, 11:05, 30 August 2005 (hist) (diff) User talk:Wsiegmund. This instance is benign. However, I'm troubled since it has the potential for causing more mischief than the typical vandal. It deceived us both. -Walter Siegmund 18:21, 13 October 2005 (UTC)
- You are quite right this list shows the edits made by 82.81.109.104 on 30th Aug, my first thought was that it might have been Matani2005 logged out, looking at the lack of replies and Matani's contribution list though it looks like Matani2005 is no longer with us or taking along break. Hmmm... it also points out that Matani2005 doesn't do welcoming. Until Matani2005 replies, I guess we'll never know for sure, but it is puzzling as to why an anon would do welcoming pretending to be a registered editor. Alf melmac 06:35, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
- Thank you for confirming my interpretation. It is interesting that I was only one of 9 that he welcomed. Moreover, the rest of his edits seem to be constructive edits, maintenence (crossed an item off the {:Template:Opentask} list), and created stubs for a small town in Germany. I apologize for not testing the Contributions links; I won't get caught by that one again. Walter Siegmund 15:49, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
Mars articles photo
Hi, sorry for messing with the Mars article with the image that you had uploaded there. All this is a minor thing, really, but it does say there that the capture shows a photo by Spirit rover. I have followed the NASA site of the rovers (http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/home/) ever since the rovers landed on the planer, and I have seen no image which would show mountains like the ones in the picture. Spirit did land in the vicinity of hills, and is currently on top of them, but the outlook of the hills is far different than what's shown (see e.g. http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/spotlight/spirit/20050713/20050713_Columbia_Hills.jpg). Minor thing, really. Just happened to notice it, and thought it's probably not 100% correct, and well, this is the result. All the best, Jouni. 84.248.24.1 19:24, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
- Unless I missed something in the program, and I followed it closely, the talk was about Spirit at the time pictures were shown, I would be quite happy to remove the Spirit reference for now if you think Opportunity was responsible. It is also possible that the BBC editors may have mistaken something. Alf melmac 19:31, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
- I have moved the image to the Mars talk page until either confirmed or the programme is online and it can be referenced again. Alf melmac 08:07, 15 October 2005 (UTC)

My user page
I do apologise for saying that you were an admin on my user page. I honestly thought you were and be sure to give me a bell when/if you change your mind about becoming one. Again, "Sorry". --Celestianpower hablamé 12:12, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
- Yeah, I can't really believe it, 59 supports and no oppose or neutrals! Not even any comments... Wow! Anyway, just out of interest, why do you not wish to become an admin? I'm sure you'd pass equally (if not more) well than me...
- And people who correct my userpage certainly deserve to be there. --Celestianpower hablamé 12:23, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
- I am sometimes able to spend twelve days nearly constantly online (excluding a few hours for sleep), and maybe the next ten days I can only spare five minutes every two hours. I personally don't see being able to delete a page as an advantage and am happy to manually revert vandalism or misguided anon/newbie edits. Two of my early edits were copyvios as I didn't understand that all the pages were kept and I innocently used bios from ox.chem as starting points, I have no doubt that will be a problem. Most of the time I just use common sense in preference to RTFM but this sometimes means I then have to make corrections according guidelines I find out about later.
- If I do change my mind, I certainly won't be RfA until next year - I'll knock on your door first if it happens though. Alf melmac 12:44, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
This has nothing to do with this but I see you've been working on an article about Naylor in your sandbox all day. 2 questions. 1). Can I help? Hello Esperanzians! A few announcements.
The Advisory Committee election results are in. In tranch A are Acetic Acid and Flcelloguy. In tranch B are Ryan Norton and Bratsche.
My other annoouncement is that our founder, JCarriker, has founded Esperanza's sister project, Wikipediology. I have written two essays here (my name is Matt Binder). My essays are under Teenage Wikipedians and Anon Editors.
On behalf of myself and Jay Carriker and the other wikipediologists, I would appreciate it if you were to join.

Thanks
For the heads up concerning the "Doopelgander" or whatever you call it : ). I actually thought I thanked you for that earlier. If you want me to be honest, I do a lot of editting at USF's library...where I have personally witnessed vandalism on this site taking place. (i.e. I am editting Wikipedia, the dude next to me is vandalizing it at the same time). This is very common, and I will try to revert any I see. I do not know why anyone would want to copy off my name to make me look like a vandal, but people are silly sometimes. Thanks for everything, and I will remember not to let the bastards grind me down. Thanks for all your support...I could have sworn I already thanked everyone.
Take care, Molotov (talk)

- ROFL Doopelgander- sounds like a lady goose on drugs. Had a similar instance with Pot Noodle once, chap was at his school computer trying to improve it, fellow schoolmate on a computer nearby taking the mickey by continuous vandalism to it, obviously not an uncommon happening. Many thanks for the shiny, putting it in my collection next edit. Alf melmac 16:03, 19 October 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the help with Ossian - faulty disambiguation page
Dear Alf,
I see you have fixed the link by removing the link to the hungarian band. Frankly that was just an advert as there was no useful content. I feel a bit guilty about removing content - even if content probably is against Wikipedia policy. There must be a way of ditinguishing bands or other items with the same name. I'll look a some good disambiguation pages.
Thanks,
--Paw42 11:25, 21 October 2005 (UTC)
- No one had edited the article for months, so I don't see any harm, anyone wanting to write an article that has more information than the disambiguation page itself will likely see the unlinked word there and create Ossian (Hungarian band), so I wouldn't overly worry about - I concur there was no useful content. There's a useful disambiguation reference at the top of the Ossian (band) article. Seems fine to me. Alf melmac 11:31, 21 October 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for the help and the nice commenst on the Ossian entry. I am a bit worried if the fan of the Hungarian band comes back. I suppose it's up to him to add a new page and revise the disambiguation page. Actually I think they just wanted to boost the band's rating in search engines by generating a link.
Thanks for sorting the presentation of the discography. I see how it should be done.

Thanks for the welcome Alf!
Thanks for your message of welcome. I do have one question, which you'll hopefully be able to answer. If I'm reading a reasonably obscure article and I notice a small mistake (one word incorrectly spelt etc.), is it alright to create a whole new edit just to fix that mistake? I'm slightly concerned that will use up loads of disk space just because I'm a pedant!
Many thanks, jbou
- Hi, You're welcome. If there's nothing else in the article that needs seeing to, one edit for a spelling fix is fine, do it. Alf melmac 15:04, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

Template:Gloucestershire-geo-stub
I removed the coat of arms from Template:Gloucestershire-geo-stub because that image is not clearly labeled as being free. Nonfree images are not allowed in stub templates. Either obtain convincing evidence that that particular coat of arms is public domain or otherwise ineligible for copyright, or do not restore the image to the template. Thank you. Kelly Martin (talk) 22:06, 3 November 2005 (UTC)
- as you like, coats of arms generally are inelligible for copyright, the particular image is used on the main Gloucestershire article and has been for some time, I am unaware of any copyright issues regarding this image. Alf melmac 22:15, 3 November 2005 (UTC)
- Using it on the main article doesn't make it eligible for the template; it can be used there without violating our nonfree image use policy. The image may be free of copyright, but until we know that it's free of copyright it's ineligible for use on a stub template. Kelly Martin (talk) 00:46, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
