Eek! The Cat
Eek! The Cat was an American animated series, created by Savage Steve Holland and Bill Kopp, that ran from 1992 to 1997 on the now defunct Fox Kids Saturday Morning block. It was re-run from 1998 to 1999. The series was about a purple cat named Eek! (exclamation point included) whose motto was "it never hurts to help". This very attitude, though, always did get him into trouble, which was what much of the humor of the show was derived from. Other characters included Eek!'s (human) family whom he cannot communicate with via language, his morbidly obese girlfriend, Annabelle, and her pet sharkdog, Sharky. In the second season, another segment was added to the show, the Terrible Thunderlizards, then another, Klutter in its final season.
Eek! The Cat was enjoyed by children and adults with its slapstick humor and its pop culture references. Shows varied from standard cartoon fare to movie spoofs (Apocalypse Now, A Clockwork Orange), musical episodes and the first Christmas special was written entirely in rhyme. The show featured many Cameos, some of whom came back for several episodes.
Characters
- Eek! the Cat, He always puts others' safety, needs, and comfort before his own. Eek can talk with all animals and most humans but cannot converse with those in his immediate household, i.e., Mom, Wendy Elizabeth and J.B.
- Mom, does a lot of house cleaning and is a student of foreign languages, especially "Spangalese". She is apparently a single mom.
- Wendy Elizabeth and J.B., the children, They are normal kids -- whiney and spoiled. They watch a lot of television. Their favorite show is The Squishy Bearz Rainbow of Enchanted Fun Minute.
- Annabelle, a female cat and Eek's girlfriend who acts like a Southern belle. She is also extremely fat, although Eek does not seem aware of this (he responds, genuinely surprised, "Really?" whenever someone comments on Annabelle's weight).
- Sharky the Sharkdog, Annabelle's pet guard dog who defends Annabelle's house with the viciousness of a shark. Sharky does not speak, but more than makes up for it in growls. Sharky typically terrorizes Eek for fun, although occasionally as a reaction to Eek's incessant trouble-causing helpfulness.
- Mittens, Eek's friend who is also a cat. His fur is blue and suffers extreme paranoia.
- Elmo the Elk, Eek!'s extremely inept friend
- Timmy, Elmo's brother. He constantly needs money for various absurd medical ailments, which Elmo tries to raise with Eek!'s help.
- The Squishy Bearz, Four bears with their own children's TV program called The Squishy Bearz Rainbow of Enchanted Fun Minute. Kozy (brown), Puffy (blue) and Wuz Wuz (pink) all have happy and friendly attitudes. The forth bear, Pierre (green), who speaks with a French accent and wears a tuque, is bitter and cynical.
