Hmmm. We do realize, of course, that grapes are STILL grown for wine in Southern England. I was looking at a wine-guide only last night that listed a bunch of 'em - Oz Clarke's? Admittedly, they are all boutique wineries, but it is possible to do so without using glass. I live in the Finger Lakes of upstate NY, so I know it's possible to grow vinifera grape even up here, in a much less temperate climate than southern England. The decline of winemaking in England was economic - the loss of daily masses with the Reformation reduced demand AND the supply of cheaper continental wines made it absurd to even try. Absolutely. There are a number of vinyards in Quebec for that matter.
