U.C. Sampdoria is a football club based in Genoa, Italy. The club was formed in 1946 from the merger of two existing clubs, Sampierdarenese and Andrea Doria. Sampdoria currently compete in the Italian Serie A and play their games at the Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris in Genoa. The team's colors are blue, white, red and black. Sampdoria plays at Stadio Luigi Ferraris, capacity 40,122, which it shares with Genoa's other club, Genoa 1893.

Sampdoria won the scudetto in 1991, so far the only time in their history that they have done so, and the club also won the Coppa Italia four times, which were each in 1985, 1988, 1989, and 1994 respectively. They also won the Cup Winners' Cup in 1990. Sampdoria also reached the UEFA Champions League final in 1992, only to lose out against Spanish giants FC Barcelona.

There has not been much success in the club in the last decade since. Sampdoria achieved a place in the UEFA Cup by finishing 5th in the table at the end of the 2004/05 Serie A season, but did narrowly lose out to Udinese Calcio in taking 4th and a UEFA Champions League spot.

At the time of the club's founding people from the southern regions of Italy were beginning to move into Genoa. It is believed that many of them picked up the newly established team as their own, especially in the neighborhoods close to the steel mills and the naval arsenals where they worked. This led supporters of the Genoa Cricket and Football Club to dub all of Sampdoria's supporters with the derogatory term 'Gabibbi' ('Gabibbo', from Cabib/Habib, is Genoese for a person of southern or Levantine/North African descent). Another disparaging nickname for Sampdoria's players is 'cyclists', this stems from their horizontally-striped jerseys, resulting from the merging of the original white-blue colours of 'Andrea Doria' and the red-black ones of 'Sampierdarenese' ('SAMPierdarenese + 'Andrea DORIA' = SAMPDORIA), which, in the 1950s did bear a striking resemblance with the attire of professional bicycle riders.
