Homburg Castle is an old height castle in Nümbrecht in Oberbergischer Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

History and buildinghistory

In the year 1276 the castle building is mentioned for the first time documentary. If the former moated castle (architecture) "Holstein" partially builds from stones and here. The water castle was purchased in the second half of the 13th century from count Gottfried by the first count of Sayn from the house Sponheim. From 1635 count Ernst von Sayn-Wittgenstein altered the castle in such a way as it is visible even today. One hundred years later the line Sayn-Wittgenstein in Bad Berleburg took over the management. After that the construction ended. Then in 1904 the expiration was stopped and in 1926 a museum was opened here, founded by Hermann Conrad.

Castle Homburg is museum of the Oberbergischer Kreis. In the immediate vicinity are a sawmill and mill and bakery. In addition, is in the former economic building of the castle, to the "Red house", the seat of the biological Station is in the former economic building a station upper mountain whose main fields of application are the scientific and practical support of the Oberbergischen nature reserves and different landscape conservation projects.

Physical experience path

The physical experience path was established in the year 2004 and is one of the "biological station upper mountain" and protection community German wood established flatly.

The traveling path and experience path goes out from Castle Homburg and leads by Homburg Bröl and Huppichteroth, goes in historical mill of Holstein and the thick stones past back to castle Homburg. In the distance 9 stations in which walk the nature is closely brought all around castle Homburg and the Bröl meadow are built up to now.

The stations are:

  • Forests around castle Homburg. Here one can get to know by peep boxes the individual types of trees species and explore.
  • The oak (all around the tree). Here the life of an oak is made clear with the help of the annual rings, and the height of an oak can be measured out.
  • Cultural landscape. The diverse human-cultural landscape becomes in and the single living spaces can be introduced with a telescope be explored.
  • Living space village. Here it is shown how the living together of people and nature functions. Some bird's calls can be heard here.
  • Hedge. The structure of hedges as well as the life in the hedge is explained here on the basis of diagrams and a view notice board.
  • Tree tops platform. Here one can experience from a platform built in the tree tops an unusually perspective and is informed by means of diagrams about the life in this area of the wood.
  • Pasture Bröl. Here the water level and the inhabitants of the Bröl brook is demonstrated with help of examination notice board and rotary radian.
  • Thick stones. The origin of the physical monument "thick stones" is given here very clearly.
  • Woodpecker's wood. In this station a look can be thrown in the nest of a spotted woodpecker.

The physical experience path castle Homburg is approx. 2.8 km long and the walk lasts as a rule 1.5 to 2 hours.
