Panoramic Images

It has been suggested that the two panorama shots at the bottom of the article are inapropriate. Any suggestions as to what should be done? Should I remove one or both, or move to different parts of the article? Martyman 06:07, 21 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hazards Noteriety

I am not sure this section is relevent. The number of deaths in the lake was brought up as evidence that somewhere else was not dangerous. I am certain that the deaths per user would compare well to any other well used body of water, I would like some way of placing this in perspective. This is a bit like finding an article about a random suburb and adding a hazards section saying 30 people have died there in the last 20 years. Martyman 04:45, 22 Oct 2004 (UTC)

I have been trying to find some comparable statistics to proove that these numbers are nothing out of the ordinary but am having a hard time trying to think of what to compare it to. Martyman 09:00, 22 Oct 2004 (UTC)
I have removed the following section from the article until someone can prove that this statistic is substantially above any other recreationaly utilized body of water. I have never ever heard Lake Burley Griffin being refered to as dangerous and I have lived here all my life and spent many years swimming and wind surfing in the lake. Between 1962 and 1991 seven people died in Lake Burley Griffin.Mrs Grassby in ACT Legislative Assembly Hansard 21 February 1991 p76 On 13 July 1997, the Royal Canberra Hospital at Acton peninsula on Lake Burley Griffin was demolished by implosion with 100,000 spectators watching. The implosion was poorly planned, and large debris and shrapnel rained down on spectators. Large fragments were found 650m from the demolition site. Nine people were injured, and a twelve year old girl was killed.Emergency Management Australia, Attorney-General's Department

The Hospital Implossion is a delicate subject that should probably be dealt with in it's own article. It had nothing directly to do with the lake itself. I can see that a link to an article about it might be suitable for this page. The implossion is detailed on the page about Kate Carnell. Martyman 04:45, 22 Oct 2004 (UTC)

It probably deserves a passing mention here (though the link needs to be made, by stating that she was sitting on its shores when it happened), but it really needs an article of its own. Ambi 04:51, 22 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Picture arrangement

Why aren't all the pictures in the section they depict? The Carrilon is mentioned in one of the sections yet it's pictured in the lead, while the map is somewhere in another section. Is this such a big problem? IMO, it looks better to have the picture, rather than the map at the top, and they're both relevant to the design section. Ambi 12:57, 24 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Lead section

Yeah, it is - particularly with this topic. While I'm here, could someone please incorporate the fact about figures in the Coalition pushing for the name Lake Menzies, and Menzies personally vetoing it? I can't find a decent spot for it. Ambi 01:06, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)
I added the naming information to the "filling" section. It should be ok there I hope. I am still stumped as to how to go about sumarising the article for a lead section. I don't believe it really needs one, as the current one seem to work pretty well. But if it is still going to hold up the FAC proccess I will keep thinking about it. Martyman 08:25, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)

That's one way of going about it. I've been trying to find an article that references websites properly, and I know there's some, but I can't find one. As to MGM's specific objection, though - I'm beginning to think that it's unworkable, because it would mean messing the article up to a point where I'd object. Ambi 11:39, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Scrivener's Design Modifications

The lines about Scrivener modifying the designs by incorporating ideas from other plans do not seem to agree with the link given. On the canberra house web page it says that although a committee prepared a plan incorporating elements of all three finalists, this was abandened when Griffin was appointed director of design and construction. The same history is given in National Capital Exhibition by the lake, although this refers to King O'Malley, the politician in charge, rather than Scrivener.

I think you are right. I will ahve to look into where I came up with that info from. Scrivener was part of the commitee (created by O'Malley) that came up with the new design for Canberra but I am having trouble figuring out which plan construction actually occured under. I belive construction began on the comittee designs before Griffin returned and took control. Though I am uncertain as to how successful he was in actually changing things back to his point of view. I have modified the section to hopefully be a bit more acurate. I do know from looking at the original Burley Griffin plans and the Committee plan, that the lake we have is very similar to the later desgn. [3] claims it was Scriveners suggestion to change the lake's design and switch to a single dam. Martyman 05:37, 15 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Top photo too dark?

This article is in great shape, but isn't the top photo a bit dark? It's hard to see the actual lake. (I know it's a dusk shot, I'm just saying it's customary to use pictures where the object is visible.) El T 09:39, 5 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

New photos

Love the new photos - I think they do a lot to improve the article. However, it'd be nice if an alternative could be found for Image:CommAveBridge.JPG, which is really too dark to be of much use. Ambi 11:47, 6 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, we could always use one of Fir0002's night shots which are much prettier, but unfortunatly even less illustrative. See: [4]. I can't remember seeing any other bridge photos floating around.
