Misato Katsuragi
Misato Kasturagi (葛城ミサト Katsuragi Misato) is a fictional character from the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion and The End of Evangelion movie. She is the head of operations at NERV, initially with the rank of captain.

She chose to have Shinji move in with her rather than letting him live alone. Misato was with her father, leader of the Katsuragi Expedition to Antarctica, during Second Impact. Her father was killed during the incident, but not before saving 14-year-old Misato by placing her in a protective capsule (which looks like an Entry Plug). She has a scar on her chest from the trauma she suffered during the Second Impact. She became mute and refused social interaction for a long time after that event. This all changed when she began to attend college, where she became more social and talkative (Ritsuko, whom she met in college, commented that she talks so much as if shes attempting to "make up for lost time"). At the time of the series, she is very extroverted (and some would say slightly alcoholic). She exhibits great concern for the Eva pilots under her command; indeed, she is something of a surrogate mother to Shinji, especially. She also has a strong drive to fight the Angels. She once seriously dated Ryoji Kaji, but they had long broken up and do not see each other again until she flies out to the UN fleet ferrying EVA-02, along with Asuka Langley Sohryu to Japan. After he came to NERV, they slowly got back together out of desperation despite Misato's dislike of him.
While on the job, Misato is normally very professional. However when she gets home to her apartment, a much lighter, more careless and carefree side of her personality can be seen. Until Shinji's arrival, her living space was a complete mess. She cannot cook for herself and relies solely on instant food. She also drinks copious quantities of beer, and having one first thing in the morning gets her day started. (Later in the series she apparently switches to canned coffee.)
Because of all these facts Misato seems to have AADD (adult attention-deficit disorder), which means, that she can hardly organize her private life, but on the job she is very professional because of the so called hyperfocus. In this aspect her "morning beer" and the other beers all over the day (and later coffee) are her self-medication. Following Asuka's arrival in Japan, she too moves in with Misato.

Fan-fic/Other info
Strangely (and what can be considered disturbingly) is that Misato is often paired up with Shinji in fan fiction. This is usually associated with lemon fiction. Reasons for this pairing in fiction often include loneliness, sorrow and desperation.
