Upshur County is a county located in the State of West Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 23,404.

Geography

The county has a total area of 919 km2 (355 mi2). 919 km2 (355 mi2) of it is land and 0 km2 (0 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.03% water.

Demographics

As of 2000, there are 23,404 people, 8,972 households, and 635,217 families residing in the county. The population density is 25/km2 (66/mi2). There are 10,751 housing units at an average density of 12 persons/km2 (30 persons/mi2). The racial makeup of the county is 98.19% White, 0.62% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 0.58% from two or more races. 0.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,972 households out of which 31.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.20% are married couples living together, 9.10% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 29.20% are non-families. 25.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the county, the population is spread out with 22.60% under the age of 18, 12.60% from 18 to 24, 25.70% from 25 to 44, 24.50% from 45 to 64, and 14.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 94.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.40 males.
