Bible quotes
First, welcome to Wikipedia! Regarding your question: you could link to Wikisource:Religious texts, but I prefer the brillant Online Parallel Bible, which allows one to look at Bible translations on a verse-by-verse level, comparatively. Wikipedia:Wikiportal/Israel
Hello Jnothman: Please contact User:Humus sapiens who wishes to start a Wikipedia:Wikiportal/Israel See his request below. Thanks IZAK 07:03, 23 May 2005 (UTC)
Hi IZAK (and everyone else here :), Do you think it's time to create Wikipedia:Wikiportal/Israel similar to Wikipedia:Wikiportal/India, Wikipedia:Wikiportal/New Zealand and other Category:Wikiportals? I'm writing this here because it was you who made those wonderful templates and we don't have a portal yet where we could communicate. What do you think? ←Humus sapiens←Talk 05:26, 23 May 2005 (UTC)
- Hi Humus, it's only me here, but I will pass your message on to "everyone". Yes, your suggestion is excellent, it is certainly time for what you describe, but I have no experience with Wikipedia portals, and if you know how, go ahead and start an Israel portal and I am sure editors of Israel-related articles will support you and join in the effort/s. Bible version
Hi. I really like the bibleverse template. A very nice tool, and thank you for using it. But I wonder, is it necessary to specify the version? Preferences can be set by the user, if you don't. I haven't followed any of the discussion on this issue, so I might be behind about something. Mkmcconn (Talk) 12:22, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Having not really worked with Talk pages much, I hope this is the right place to reply! I have pondered this myself... It ISN'T necessary to specify the version, and the default will be shown (KJV I think?). From my view, the reason for the various versions was partially because in Jewish-related documents, it is of particular interest to be able to open a source in Hebrew or, better, parallel Hebrew-English. It may nonetheless be useful elsewhere.
I'm not sure what you mean by a user preference. Maybe, yes, a preferable solution would be to open a page with a list of applicable sources for choice (annoying because I then have to keep a register of which sources are OT only, NT only, include or don't include Apocrypha, Pseudepigraphia, etc, but surely possible; also because the current list of sources is fairly unwieldly and would need to be sorted and categorised for end-user use), but I don't really want people to require the middle page. An extension of this could have a cookies-based preference for source (with the limitations of my hosting the script, I cannot have more than client-side prefs).
A further extension, although one likely to annoy many users, could include a frame at the top of the opened page giving alternative versions, but of course some of the current version options have this for a limited selection already. It would certainly be frustrating if the user was presented with a list and was not able to set a preference for default: some articles include many citations, and it would be annoying to have to select the source for each one opened. Certainly an original purpose of the script was to speed the process of finding the cited verse (and to interpret the citation).
But I think this discussion is best continued in Template talk:Bibleverse. If you are okay with that, please copy this discussion there. --jnothman 12:45, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- People use their Talk pages in different ways; but, I prefer to maintain a thread of conversation. So, I add your page to my watchlist, to see if you reply. Sometimes it might be a good idea to leave a see my talk note, on the user's page, so that you get that splashy "you have messages" notice. Mkmcconn (Talk) \
- As for my question, I would think that for those Bible sites that use cookies for client-side preferences, the script might allow that cookie to be used rather than force the selection of a default version. Most Bible sites already have a drop-list for selecting versions, if the cookie-default isn't the one you want, after all. I'll continue with you over on that page's talk (which I am watching), if this requires in-depth deliberation and a wider audience. Mkmcconn (Talk) 13:15, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Rv blanking on My Messenger
You've reverted blanking on the above article twice now... Notably, a vote of deletion has been placed on the article by its author and only editor who had blanked it. I am a relative newbie, so please explain if there is a reason that it should be unblanked, and not just speedy-deleted...? --jnothman talk 08:44, 1 August 2005 (UTC)

Hebrew Alphabet
Hi! I was looking at the different articles on the different Hebrew letters, and realized that it would be really great if they followed the same format. I jotted down my idea and tried it out with Aleph and Bet here. Check it out and tell me if you think I should start working on the rest of the alphabet. Your comments will be appreciated! Sputnikcccp 13:00, 10 October 2005 (UTC)
- I read your comments and agree totally. I'm not a programmer, so the infobox is a bit beyond my limited (read: nonexistant) computer skills. That's a job for a mensch who wants to help out in this project. I agree that there should a letter variant section, and I'll add that to the template with the changes to Bet and Gimmel per your suggestions. Thanx for the input! Sputnikcccp 00:23, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
- First of all, Shanah Tovah! Hope you had good holidays and an easy fast. Finally, I can stop missing school. Anyway, the pictures on the Hebrew Wikipedia (like [[1]]) are perfect - they have torah script, rashi script, cursive, everything. But, can we take them from there (Hebrew Wiki) or do they have to be uploaded to commons? And, I do like the basic infobox, and I don't think the other infobox that you suggested is neccesary. After all, that's basically what's in the article, in a box. And as for the chupchiks, I think that's it; I'm not sure about the dalet - I don't know what sound it makes - and the /θ/ sound I've usually seen is a Tav with a chupchik, not a Tet, but again, im not sure. I'll ask my cousin this Shabbat (she's Israeli). But everything looks good, and I really need to go to sleep because I'm exhausted from the fast and I have school tomorrow, so I'm signing off now... Sputnikcccp 02:16, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
- I saw the infobox you added - that's great! Never mind what I said before; I was worried that it would be too much information, but it's great. Nice job! Todah rabah. Sputnikcccp 18:00, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
- Plenty more missing university yet for me... Sukkot in the last two weeks of term. Oy! Anyway, my fast was well so small-talk done. You're welcome, I enjoyed making my first infobox =P You might be right with the tav thing; it would be more sensible, but something has scarred me since my childhood in a way that I always get these confused in terms of their use as "th". The sound of that IPA character for dalet-chupchik is "th" as in "the" (as opposed to "th" in "thought"). --jnothman talk 14:28, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
- So I was wondering; when do you think that I should replace the letter pages? Should I wait till I've done all the alphabet on my userpage, and then replace them all, or do it letter by letter as I do them? Just a thought... Sputnikcccp 12:23, 19 October 2005 (UTC)
Thanx for the corrections! I was very tired, and the problem was i was now writing it all on my own, as opposed to rewriting the information from the page, as i did with Bet. I do know the difference 'tween shuruk and holam male; i had just put the pronunciation under the wrong heading. And you're right, it isn't a dagesh, but it's not a mapiq either, so i'm not sure what to call it other than 'dot'. Ok, now i get what you mean in 3 but am not sure what you mean exactly to put it. The same with 6 and 7; I don't know how I could explain thiose withoout getting into grammer, which is not what i want to do. And as for 8, does that mean in Arabic, say, vav is just vav, not v, oo, and oh? And that mater lectiones bit... im not sure what that is either... I got to go, but thanx for the correction. Sputnikcccp 11:57, 20 October 2005 (UTC)
A response like that is better on the article talk page, so I've copied it there.
Thanx for that; I never actually learnt to how edit/format text, and so it's all been mainly trial and error/ looking at how other people do it. Anyway, I've semi-corrected Vav per your comments; any other corrections? I think I'm going to start replacing the letter pages soon, if I have time. Sputnikcccp 03:09, 23 October 2005 (UTC)
- I've already joined. At least, my name is on the list of participants, I think. But you're right, it has been inactive. Anyway, I'm working on replacing the letter pages. Thanks! Sputnikcccp 02:13, 28 October 2005 (UTC)
You seem to be better at this pronunciation thing than me; I was wondering if you could help me with the pronunciation sections, since you will probably correct it anyway. I'm working on Heth now, and I'm not sure about pronunciation. What is the difference between Heth and Kaph in terms of IPA or whatever? How else is Heth pronounced? I've been looking through the IPA articles but they're very hard to understand if you're not a phonologist. Thanks a lot!! Sputnikcccp 14:57, 7 November 2005 (UTC)
- That seems to be a very good point; I'll ge tright on it. The only reason I had put it in, in the first place, was because there was sometimes something in the original article itself about that. Thanks for all your help so far! Sputnikcccp 02:39, 8 November 2005 (UTC)

Template:Mormon_jew
Looking at a new article called Groups Exiled from Judaism, and not quite sure what to make of it, I was shocked to see that the well-used Template:Jew has now been "taken-over" by a pro-Mormon user and a new similar-looking Template:Mormon_jew is now being utilised. This Mormon template plagiarises and makes confusing use of the original Template:Jew. The Mormon template must be radically changed ASAP. Your attention is needed. Perhaps we should follow official channels too. Thank you. IZAK 16:51, 1 November 2005 (UTC)

AFD helper
Nice script. I'm not so keen about the opening in a new window, because I usually keep a second tab open in Firefox to do my editing, but otherwise it seems to work great and it does make the AFD voting process much quicker. --howcheng [ talk • contribs • web ] 07:20, 2 November 2005 (UTC)
- Actually, I had a thought; what if you had it so that if the AFD nom were in its own page (i.e., not viewing the entire log, but just the one for a single article), it didn't open in a new window? --howcheng [ talk • contribs • web ] 07:23, 2 November 2005 (UTC)
- By in its own page, do you mean that I provide a frame that is consistently used, or do you mean that I just always use the same target, so it'll pop-up the first time and change the same page for future edits? I use Opera, so once it opens up, I just hit the 1 key and it moves back to the nominations listing, and I can make sure my vote was posted correctly later. Maybe this discussion should continue on the script's talk page. jnothman talk 09:31, 2 November 2005 (UTC)
Excellent idea; it definitely speeds things up. PJM 12:07, 2 November 2005 (UTC)
This makes voting much faster. The only thing I don't like is that sometimes the AFD page hangs as the Vote links are inserted. Also, it can be touchy if you click in one of the textboxes before it saves the page. I will probably make a copy of it to tweak for myself, but it's a good starting point. Thanks! --mdd4696 21:29, 2 November 2005 (UTC)
Hi, thanks for letting me know about the script. As I am a complete nincompoop when it comes to technical stuff, I have no idea how to use. However, since I use tabbed browsing in Firefox, AfD and other similar things are still pretty streamlined. Thanks for the offer! --Jeffrey O. Gustafson - Shazaam! - <*> 02:06, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

Afd Nomination Helper
Hi, I've tried that on Blannoying and Erustication and it worked! Given the difficulty of what you're doing, I think works very well. It feels a little sensitive with windows popping into existence etc and I'll need to get some experience with using it to comment further, but well done, that was very quick and it's potentially very useful. Dlyons493 Talk 20:54, 3 November 2005 (UTC)
- PS There may be some issue with the Afd Template appearing on the page? It didn't seem to appear intially on Blannoying and I purged the cache thinking that might be the reason. It does appear there now but still doesn't on Erustication despite purging again. Not sure what's happening here.

Re: Delete per nom
Ah yes. I wrote one of them long ago, but decided it would be stupid to use it; it's only slightly less useful than your AFD helper. The deletion policy is about gathering consensus through reasoned discussion; just because something seems like a good idea, it doesn't mean that it actually is. I'll give it a go to see exactly what it does, but I'm pretty certain it's not a good thing. Cheers, Alphax τεχ 14:47, 7 November 2005 (UTC)

Am I bringing back memories yet? :) Anyway... I don't really have anything to say besides, small world, huh? :) pfctdayelise 03:45, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

Re: stuff
Alrighty then, first of all: the AFD helper is actually better than I expected; it wasn't immediately clear that a reason was asked for. You could probably document it a bit better and make all of the steps in auto-afding a bit better (or use the existing auto-afd code), but overall it's not as brainless as I thought it might be. So my apologies for biting your head off; I had initially thought that it would just make it faster to vote "d, nn.". Maybe if you could force a comment and make it longer than say, 10 characters?
Anyway, about helpdesk-l:

Hi. You tried to install the afd helper, but it seems you copied the script at a time when some things had accidentally been capitalised, breaking the script. Please replace AFD_helper with afd_helper in your monobook.js. Thanks and enjoy! jnothman talk 22:25, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
- I just fixed that but still have the same problem. None of the scripts seems to be working. WAvegetarian (talk) (email) (contribs) 22:35, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
Thank you for your help. I will probably ask you for more help regarding the loading later, but right now I have to go to dinner. Thanks again WAvegetarian (talk) (email) (contribs) 23:05, 11 December 2005 (UTC)

thanks re: my RfA :-)
Hey Jnothman! Thanks for your support on my RfA. The final outcome was (57/4/3), so I am now an administrator. If you need help, have a question, or just want to chat (or if I get out of line!), please don't hesitate to let me know! Again, thanks! :D
Do you have the page I typed within the previous hour?
Was-contributions-reason for-My answer-See the Spider-
Also, find the page which disappeared just after 1:00 a.m.I can understand why it did-I just want to be sure you got it-
I left a note about the Spider-I figure the Spider erased it-
I provided a direct answer as to the reason for my contributions.Part of my answer is that that the internet is a seeming toy. It's invitation to converse, along with the range of information available could be wonderful.Unfortunately,it could have the new colloquialism, the dark side. That is a poor metaphor which does not value a good night's sleep in the preferable dark. The Spider and Strangelove was part of the item.If time be short for anything,or of unspecified length, the manner of worthless struggle in this world-planet was there-in described. As long as you did or will read it,fine.I am not concerned about it's deletion.Thank you-
Thank you, Jnothman, for your support of my RfA - I'll do my best as an admin to help the reality of Wikipedia live up to the dream! BDAbramson T 15:59, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
Helpdesk page header
Thanks for fixing up the page header. I was going to "be bold" but I've been out of touch for a couple of days and you beat me to it. I like the way it's finished up.
- That was me, sorry, forgot to add my sig yet again. --LesleyW 22:39, 14 December 2005 (UTC)

If you have my reference to a railroad "stub" turnout-I noticed a stub article reference on your site-this is a lingual problem-multiple definition of terms-My 1959 websters collegiate dictionary had an almost continuous systematic four definitions as an average thru-out the text where ever there was any multiple(more than one definition)I have concluded that universal data systems originate from a source electronic storage which was damged,or suffered a componant failure(some particular circuit or module)resulting in so to speak salvaging by substituting near but not exact meanings. The word take in my 1947 webster unabridged has over 50 definitions following the first.(may be relative to idea of "mistake")Foul is close to four-one begins to swear-(obscenities)What may happen is a data failure-the individual has become the victim of cross purposes in the system. Many times I have found myself working with tools, partcularly, and had to give up.I would go back into the house and sit down and try to figure out better ways of accomplishing the task.I would either remember a better method,or,on creative days, concieve of one.If one of these solutions did not occur,I would consider the job unecessary.Sometimes dats or a week would pass, and a solution would pop into my brain. These tasks were usually small dream jobs in my workshop.I have since relegated anything important to the factory.(buy a new one)Rhyme swear with wear-The letter of the law-In fact,I finally discarded a 20 volume do-it-yourself encyclopedia out of disgust.Do what yourself? No man is an Island-True fact-In a time is no object world more would be possible-Time has a value-I saved one or two volumes of the encyclopedia for crypt value, which was the only value that remained-The article was on a page with a garden pathway curvature resembling a type of railway curve, with a number according to my own code observation, railroad related. This being an image, then must go to a graphics mode somewhere.Division,thoughts,images-data overlaps in an image system-something errant in a central cyber index-and/or something missing-The entire code track or path I have found puts references for apple pie,on occasion,in Chilton's auto repair manual-There is confusion in the world-One item for main page "Kadee"-In model railroading,Kadee is a special coupler manufacturer.Adress-720 grape street-medford-oregon.Somewhere in central America,(from a national geographic article)there is a bird named the Kiskadee-The article says that the bird makes it's nest from dried or shedded snake skins-This may be close co-operation between bird and snake-Thus,plane and train-I have installed probably a hundred of the very small couplers on ho scale models-they approach the real thing in function and appearance-they do not come standard on the majority of models;which use only a simple hook arrangement-Without exception, the smaller the scale model, the les working parts it has.Deletions and substitutions are utilized-Speculation-Lexicon-Mexican-aztec-A to z technology-Mex-Mix-Where a universal language could have disappeared-Mexico and south-?I spotted the personal name Kadee and had to put this in-Maybe you can make something of it-A value in 12 ounce locomotives-model or module?
- I assume this user is the same as Carl helsing who has twice posted on my talk page material of a similar genre. I still do not get it. If anyone ever sees this, can they give me any idea on what this is asking me to do, if anything? It seems strangely too cohesive to be computer generated. jnothman talk 22:31, 14 December 2005 (UTC)
- Looks computer-generated to me, probably seeded with words from your talk page or links from it. --LesleyW 22:47, 14 December 2005 (UTC)
- I'm quite sure it's not computer generated: after I deleted the first posting from Carl on this talk page and left a note on his talk page, saying, "I didn't understand your message. Or any of your contributions to wikipedia. Please be more coherent."; I received the responses above, which both claims that the responses are typed, and responds directly to my deletion of the first post and comment on the user's talk page.
- I further don't think that this could be seeded from stuff on my talk page, nor that with that number of errors, and that amount of seeming coherence, this could be computer generated. But it is nonsense, or psychosis. jnothman talk 23:15, 14 December 2005 (UTC)
- I agree it's nonsense. I'm somewhat intrigued, and have been poking around contribs etc. I'm less convinced than I was, but I still think it could be a clever bot, perhaps in conjunction with its creator who's probably sitting out there laughing at us. There are some smart people out there doing AI linguistic stuff (see Turing test and related pages). Some of it looks very stream-of-consciousness and it wouldn't be hard to simulate that by following random links and taking bits of text on the way - the cleverness would be in selecting the bits and joining them together but I imagine it can be done by those who have the time and inclination. If there is no bot involved, then the user is one very, er, unusual individual. --LesleyW 03:45, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
