The 2005 World Women's Handball Championship, the 17th team handball world championship for women, is played in Saint Petersburg, Russia between December 5 and December 18, 2005.
The Danish newspaper Berlingske Tidende have touted Russia as the tournament favourites, while reigning European champions Norway have been hit by injuries, with playmaker and captain Gro Hammerseng out along with back player Katja Nyberg.[1] Olympic champions Denmark were also named as a favourite, with their coach Jan Pytlick retiring from the job after the Championship, while radio and TV commentators in Denmark did not mention the reigning World Champions France when naming their favourites. Hungary and South Korea have been mentioned, however, the latter coming off a runner-up position in the eight-team World Cup friendly tournament in Denmark in November.[2]
