this should be text in italics, is can be achieved by using two apostrophes

this text should now be bold, achieved by using three apostrophes

this one is super funky. it involves 5 apostrophes on each side. who does this?

if you want to put two apostrophe marks in the text without formatting anything by accident put <pre> or <nowiki> tags around it. for example... '' !
