Iona is a census-designated place located in Lee County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 11,756.
Geography
Iona is located at 26°30'38" North, 81°57'32" West (26.510425, -81.958940)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 26.4 km² (10.2 mi²). 18.5 km² (7.1 mi²) of it is land and 8.0 km² (3.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 30.17% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 11,756 people, 6,023 households, and 3,740 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 636.6/km² (1,648.5/mi²). There are 9,290 housing units at an average density of 503.1/km² (1,302.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 97.47% White, 0.41% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.48% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.83% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. 3.94% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 6,023 households out of which 11.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.9% are married couples living together, 5.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.9% are non-families. 31.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.95 and the average family size is 2.36.
In the CDP the population is spread out with 10.2% under the age of 18, 3.6% from 18 to 24, 17.6% from 25 to 44, 29.1% from 45 to 64, and 39.5% who are 65 years of age or older.
