The Libyan Coat of Arms, although not exactly the same, remains similar to the one used whilst the country was part of the Federation of Arab Republics. The current coat of arms was adopted upon its exit from the Federation in 1977.

Akin to the flag, the colour Green is prominent, providing a link to both the Green cloak of Muhammad as well as Colonel Gaddafi's so called, Green Revolution.

The bird of prey shown in the coat of arms, is the Hawk of Quariash, the emblem of the tribe of Muhammad.

Finally, the title of the state, The Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, is written in the banner clutched in the feet of the hawk.
