The Portuguese local election of 2005 took place on October 9. The election consisted of three separate elections in the 308 Portuguese municipalities, the election for the town councils, whose winner is elected mayor, another election for the town assembly and a last one for the lower-level parish assembly, whose winner is elected parish president.
The Socialist Party was the major defeated of the this election with a slight lost of mandates. The Social Democratic Party conquested some municipalities to the Socialists, while the right-wing People's Party was reduced to only one municipality, Ponte de Lima. In the left, the Unitarian Democratic Coalition, led by the Communist Party regained some of its former influence at the local level, taking 4 municipalities from the Socialists in the districts of Beja, Évora and Setúbal, achieving a total of 32. The Left Bloc kept the presidence of its unique municipality, Salvaterra de Magos.
