Re: Edit Counter

Ah, and here I was about to reply to your last version. :-) Good work! Here's my thoughts on 3.10 (I'll try 3.20 in a minute...): The GUI is pretty nice, and it's great that you can read and merge from more than one htm file. However, the GUI needs some work - for instance, no "exit" button (only the X and cancel), and an output besides System.out would be nice. If you haven't changed some of those things in 3.20, I'll see what I can do. Let me get back to you after I try out 3.2. Thanks a lot! Flcelloguy (A note?) 16:13, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

3.20 looks good! I especially like the "New query" and outputs. I'll see if I can add some buttons (i.e. "Done", etc.). Right now, I've spent some time with the edit summary - it's working pretty well, except that the editing sections with or without edit summaries is a bit of a pain. I need some more time with that and I'll work on it later tonight and later this week. Anyways, I was thinking it's time to move to project off of user subpages and move it to a subpage of WP:TOOLS (like the popups), merge the two pages, and call it "Statistics Tool" or something like that, created by Flcelloguy and Titoxd. What do you think? Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 17:14, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, you sure get a lot of messages in one day. :-) I'll start merging the two pages and moving it, and while I like that name, I'll see if I can improve on it. :-) Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 21:35, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The output of that page looks interesting. I'm sure we could design a GUI that could produce a pie chart of percent breakdown by namespace - I remember I did something like this last year, but I'll have to dig it up from old files. :-) The number of distinct pages edited looks to be a bit harder to do - we would have to keep track of each distinct page edited as another variable, and then check each page to see if it matched. I'm getting some progress done on the edit summary, but I still need some time. It works right now except that the section edits can't be properly parsed. Once the program identifies it as section editing, I'm having a bit of trouble with the unicode arrow, but I should figure it out in the coming days. Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 15:58, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

IRC

Hello there, hope you are well. Today I was able to register my nickname, FireFox, on IRC which I haven't been able to do in the past. I have been told you have the ability to raise access levels, so if you wouldn't mind, and if it isn't against any policy, could you please raise my access level to 11 (which is what I've been told most admins have) or higher on irc://irc.freenode.net/wikipedia-en-vandalism - Thanks, FireFox 20:02, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I echo that sentiment, hope you are well. I just registered my nickname too! It's all just a little to hetic. I'm like a lost puppy in there :-D so I'm just observing. Could you explain how it all works? Thanks KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 20:27, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

PLEASE HELP ME

Hi. I am the user user:Bucephalus. I was trying to make navigation popups work for me but I am inept. I edited (= broke) my monobook page and now I can't access it to change back because I have broken that user name. The page is protected, so only me (but my user name is broken) and admins can fix. Please could revert this page:

to the 30th march version. Sorry. I really am this stupid. --Bucephalus1 20:49, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Vandal Blocking

(I'm posting this so you have it written down for your scrapbook someday... :)

17:07, December 19, 2005 Titoxd blocked "User:(*)Stars(*)" with an expiry time of indefinite (don't you have something better to do than vandalize?)
17:09, December 19, 2005 Titoxd blocked "User:No I don't actually" with an expiry time of indefinite (good, then go play somewhere)

Nice job, Tixoxd...I was laughing out loud as I watched this progress. Nice vandal blocking, by the way!--ViolinGirl 22:25, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I try to help with the vandal whacking, but I need to read up about it...there isn't much non-admins can do, right? Before that, though, it looks like I need to learn how to make headers. I can just see you clicking on the history..."Where IS that "new message"? ha ha! Sorry about that!--ViolinGirl 23:40, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

PS Beethoven's Symphony No. WHAT???!

Well, I was just kidding about learning how to make headers...sorry for not making that clear...I did fix it, anyway, though...oh, yeah, and String Quartet...I must be very ignorant...Beethoven didn't write 131 SQ's, did he? And thanks, I'll keep you in mind if I need help sometime...For now, ViolinGirl 00:11, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Whew, you scared me! I was thinking, "Beethoven isn't THAT old, is he?!!" LOL--ViolinGirl 00:18, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much! I remember reading that somewhere, but it will be helpful having it on my talk page for a while so I can learn how. So even though I can't block people, I can at least now revert changes...(at least, as long as I remember how!) Thanks again!--ViolinGirl 00:38, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I will take you up on the offer of blocking vandals for me, if I need it. Maybe someday I will consider becoming an administrator. Thanks again for everything today. Have a nice rest-of-the-day!--ViolinGirl 01:15, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The remainder of the Big Four: (in order of readiness) Rita, Wilma, and Katrina. 2005AHS eventually. Right now, Rita first, that article's close. Then Wilma. Then I want 2004AHS to be renominated. Ivan needs to be renominatated. Then we should look at the other articles for 2004 storm and see if any have and hope of being an FA. Ivan should be desiganted a good article very soon. Rita too. Please can you let me know what you think of the neutrality of the article. Also can you advise me what to do with links that aren't making it through the spam filter. Ironically, somewhat, it is in relation to proving that they weren't spamming anyone lol. Sorry, there's a lot of irony there, since their current main claim to fame is that they may soon be closed down forever due to spam abuse. But they are the biggest online casino in the world, which is another claim to fame. Its a current event too. They were shut down *YESTERDAY* for spam abuse - AFAIK the first ever online casino to be shut down for spam abuse, and for this to happen to the biggest one in the world is a major news story. Let me know what you think. Zordrac (talk) Wishy Washy Darwikinian Eventualist 20:42, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Why shouldn't there be an awards section? I had such things for rap stars like ie.Merge. What is the difference? These are official awards given to the best online casino in the world. It demonstrates the high prestige that this casino has (or had, as the case may be). They are referenced in all other articles about the group. Note words such as "It is surprising that a group as well reputed as Fortune Lounge Group could have been engaged in spam" (sic). The awards are official, they are not just some web site or something. Note that all 3 groups that gave them awards have been in the forefront of prosecuting them for spam. Quite relevant. Zordrac (talk) Wishy Washy Darwikinian Eventualist 20:58, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm. If you saw how much I cut out of the "awards" page, you'd see that these ones ARE the only non-advertisement ones :). I was tempted to link straight to the awards, but was wary of doing so. Oh, and as I said before, what do I do with the 2 important links not being displayable due to Wikipedia's anti-spam software forbidding them? They were the 2 bits that prove their innocence. Seems a bit unfair that they aren't allowed to prove their innocence. Not very neutral then. Zordrac (talk) Wishy Washy Darwikinian Eventualist 21:02, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

They're not just not clickable - it won't even let me type them in with nowiki. I have to have spaces, thus giving the wrong web address. So what do I do? Zordrac (talk) Wishy Washy Darwikinian Eventualist 21:10, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'd discussed removing all that content with RJN.. is there a reason it was reverted to its previous state? AfD closing question

Ahoy! I would like you to reconsidder the AfD here: Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/SourceryForge. There were five delete votes, two keep. One of those keeps was conditional, the other had a rationale of "fun name." There was an additional delete vote stricken, more because of my admittedly half-assed nomination then the veracity of the article - I illicited further comment from that user but was ignored. I won't do a full DRV or relist or anything here, just asking for a reconsideration. Thanks for your time! --Jeffrey O. Gustafson - Shazaam! - <*> 08:59, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Titoxd Wacko Phoenix,

I just wanted to thank you for supporting me in my RfA. To tell you the truth, I was surprised by all the support I've gotten. I never saw myself as more than an occasional Wiki-hobbyist.

My wife sends her curses, as Wikipedia will likely suck up more of my time. She jokingly (I think) said she was tempted to log on to Wikipedia just to vote Oppose and let everyone know that she didn't want her husband to be an admin.

It means a great deal to me to get a cliché vote from you. I'll make sure your trust in me is founded. --Deathphoenix 14:49, 28 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

But I'm still working on the feedback given to me by my last RFA. Again, I do want to be an admin one day, but that's not the reason I made that comment. I was merely pointing out that I felt kind of weird speaking so authoritatively and thinking so big among a group I wasn't a part of. I felt kind of alone, you know, like a visiting-team member in the home team's locker room. It was just me being a worry wart again. (And this is me talking too much again ;) ) -- Hurricane Eric - my dropsonde - archive 00:23, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I'm waiting for the rest of our volunteers to report back before certifying the results. The announcement above by Wikizach was a little bit premature, but I'm sure the results now are correct anyways. More on this once the results are certified. Thanks! Another Vandal

Hi there Tito. Was wondering if you could do the honors in blocking this vandal, Ham Kazerooni, another one of the vandals from earlier today. Thanks for all your help. SWD316 talk to me 04:35, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Tito. SWD316 talk to me 04:41, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
If I could, can I just start a list of socks he creates here so you can block them, if you don't want me too thats fine but your the only one I know who is here right now to deal with him, so can I or do you want me to list it somewhere else? SWD316 talk to me 04:54, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

open proxies

Actually, it was User:Fvw who had some code for checking open proxies, but he just ran it in batch mode, not in response to each IP that got blocked. However, I was under the impression that the developers actually put in code for this behind the scenes and were running it at one time, but got some ISP complaints and stopped. However, it could presumably be revived, and at developer level the code would undoubtedly have access to the underlying IPs of blocked registered accounts as well as blocked anonymous IPs. So that's probably the thing to pursue. I recall this being discussed with Brion or Tim Starling but don't recall the outcome... maybe it was left up in the air. -- Curps 07:00, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Negroponte edits

I'm the one who edited the John Negroponte page that you reverted. I stopped cycling the edits once I realized that you are an Admin. Nevertheless, I believe that if you take your role seriously, you should take a hard look at that page and take action on your own. I have absolutely no axe to grind in this one, and don't know Negroponte from Adam. On the other hand, as a fair-minded, rational person, seeing an article that consists virtually COMPLETELY of partisan attacks (and no, just footnoting someone else's attack doesn't make it 'verifiable') makes a mockery of Wikipedia's 'peer reviewing'. If you look through the history of that page you will see quite a few questions about the NPOV issue, and calls for peer reviews. Unfortunately, the only people spending the time to write (surprise, surprise) are the partisans. What I did in the large edit that you reverted was simply to exise the attacks (which were COMPLETELY unbalanced. By no conceivable stretch of the imagination could they be considered remotely neutral.) What I left were purely the objective, verifiable facts, along with the dozens of links to the attack pages that say the same thing as the attack verbiage in the article.

If you really want to help Wikipedia, take a serious read of that article, and consider it from the perspective of a truly objective academic. If you were a university professor, and some student handed in a paper that relied primarily on that "wisdom of crowds" Wikipedia entry, you would give him or her an F. I would have no problem with that 1500 word hatchet job if it were balanced with a 1500 word supporting piece. But it isn't, so where is the neutral point of view? As a result, what is a fair-minded, NON-partisan Wikipedian supposed to do? I'm neither a fan nor a critic of Negroponte. As I said, I don't know him at all, or even much about him. But I do know a pure attack screed when I read one, and I was simply trying to help keep Wikipedia neutral and useful. So I ask you: if I'm not enough of an expert to quote chapter and verse in praise of Negroponte, but I'm reasonable to know that the existing entry is clearly UNreasonable, what am I supposed to do? Leave it so some impressionable elementary school kid researching a term paper swallows all that stuff without hearing any objective facts? I guess that under the concept of 'incremental revision' you were right to revert my wholesale edit, but now that you have stepped in, I think it is incumbent on you to carefully review that whole article you just replaced and determine whether it is, indeed, written with a NPOV. And if you don't believe it is, then YOU edit it in a way that would be acceptable to the Wikipedia community.

Images

It's actually not hardcoded anywhere as its not really egregious. It is considered good style to right-align images at the beginning of a section as it becomes easier for the eye to read the text. Most of the top ten-fifteen people on this list avoid the left-alignment at the beginning, or do away with it completely. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 08:05, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Just wanted to give you a heads-up regarding images and works published by the Mexican government. These weren't in the public domain as per the "Ley Federal del Derecho de Autor" as it was written before July 23, 2003. Even with the current rendition of the law, it isn't entirely clear what is the copyright status of works by the government. This in relation to this image in commons and any others you may have seen around or uploaded yourself. Thank you. -- Rune Welsh | ταλκ | Esperanza 18:43, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I point you to this edition of the law, in article 29. That article was modified to remove the explicit reference to the Mexican government and the change was effective on July 23, 2003. I was hoping the Diario Oficial of that day would offer any commentary on the issue, but I was found wanting.
I'd remove the image just to be on the safe side, unless you have the image's exact date and source. The fact that you've seen the image floating around campaign websites is not too encouraging either. Given the lack of culture in Mexico regarding copyright law, they might as well be in violation of somebody's copyright.
My lawyer says that without any explicit reference the copyright situation of works produced after that date would have to be defined by the courts now. In any case, we currently have a "Ley de Transparencia" request on the matter.
Let me know if you have any questions. Congrats for your successful candidacy in the Esperanza elections! -- Rune Welsh | ταλκ | Esperanza 22:15, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

AWB?

Are you sure that AWB thing is cleaning up correctly? Sections using the "new section" tool (like this one) create titles that have a space between the ==s and the words, but the AWB thing removes them. --AySz88^-^ 22:17, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Titoxd,

I wish to thank you for your vote on my RfA. It has passed with a final tally of 59/0/0. If I can ever help with anything or if you have any comments about my actions as an admin, please let me know! KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 04:15, 31 December 2005 (UTC) [reply]

yay! more newbie questions. (aren't you glad you're in esperanza?)

Hey Tito! Hope you had a good Christmas. I don't know if you enjoy stopping the vandals but you were very helpful to me last time so I have another question for you. I found another one! 202.63.168.43 has done 3 blankings. Should I skip to a substtest 2a? maybe a 3? It seems like letting them vandalize like 10 times and hoping wikipedians aren't too lazy to warn them 4 times before we do anything is not very efficient. Is this up to the admins or is there a strict policy governing this? What do you think?

Also, someone blanked my comment on a talk page and several things have been added since then. Would reverting it take away the recent legitimate things? What do I do in this situation?

thanks tito!
