Frederick the Great (in German: Friedrich der Grosse) (January 24, 1712 - 1786) ruled Prussia from 1740 to 1786.

He was known as the "enlightened despot".

He had a vision for an independent Germany, although Bismarck had to go to war to achieve it.

He married Elisabeth Christine von Braunschweig-Bevern.

He was preceded by Frederick William I (Friedrich Wilhelm I)(the "Soldier King").

He was succeeded by Frederick William II (Friedrich Wilhelm II)
