Started a blog with over the night....
REDIRECT
Good call Tskoge - I agree with your re-revert. There is nothing on the disambiguation page that is "bigger" than THE PSP. Plus it is a recognised brand name, unlike the others (which are just short-forms). Deano 17:33, 5 September 2005 (UTC)
PSP Redirect
Okay, there are a total of 12 articles that can be reffered to as "PSP". The REDIRECT *needs* to go to the Disambiguation page. To link this 'ambiguous three-letter acronym' to any single *one* of these articles is asinine. I'd easily say a couple of you have broken the 3R rule here. At this point, if someone *still* feels that PSP needs to redirect to a single one of the 1/12th of the possible meanings to PSP, please RfC.
For reference, from GoogleFights:
- Personal Software Process - 113,000,000 results
- Payment Service Provider - 22,600,000 results
- PlayStation Portable - 13,200,000 results
- Pennsylvania State Police - 11,100,000 results
- Paint Shop Pro - 9,380,000 results
- You'll notice that the PlayStation Portable is *not* the most popular of the PSP's. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.106.209.210 (talk • contribs)
- Just no. If you use quotes to surround the queries, the results are much different. The only entry that comes close to the PlayStation Portable is Paint Shop Pro. PSP is a brand name for the PlayStation, and Paint Shop Pro is the only other major entry. Put it up for a vote if you wish.--SirNuke 04:16, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
- Now, we will use some logic in this PSP redirect argument and you will tell us if the PSP acronym for "Personal Software Process" is as popular as the acroymn for PlayStation Portable. Pcpp 08:31, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
- Just Googled all of them:
- 122,000 for "Personal Software Process"
- 223,000 for "Payment Service Provider"
- 10,200,000 for "PlayStation Portable"
- 335,000 for "Pennsylvania State Police"
- 10,500,000 for "Paint Shop Pro"
- The Sony one is just behind the paint shop program, but is also much newer. Googling for PSP shows that the Sony one tops the list. Tskoge 13:10, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
- Your own data seems to contradict your conclusion... 10,500,000 is a larger number than 10,200,000 in every radix and numeral system I'm aware of. Either you have discovered a radical new form of numerical notation or you've misinterpreted your results. In any case, this should redirect to the disambiguation page simply because there is at least one other notable usage of the acronym, and it's a general rule here to do so whenever there is reasonable ambiguity regarding a term. It isn't our place to determine what readers "should" expand the initialism as. -- uberpenguin 20:17, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
- I made a disambiguation page for PSP before reading this discussion. Forgive me... I reverted it once I saw that this is a controversy. However, I strongly agree for those who vote for the disambiguation. I am probably biased because I have been using Paint Shop Pro for years and haven't touched the Sony system, and in my mind PSP always referred to the software. However, it appears that, given the evidence presented in the form of search results, there are a lot of people who regularly use some of the other terms listed. I think to dismiss the usage of this acronym for the other terms would be a mistake. cerebralpayne 16:04, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
- I could go either way on this. I'd like it to stay as a redirect to the disambiguation page given the many other uses for PSP (including the popular Paint Shop Pro), however, the problem here is that most, if not all, the links to "PSP" are PlayStation Portable related and therefore the page should probably be a redirect to PlayStation Portable. I don't really feel strongly either way, but thats just my 2cents. K1Bond007 20:07, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
- Links that intend "PlayStation Portable" as "PSP" should be disambiguated anyway; it's always considered poor form to link to a redirect (or disambiguation page) for reasons like this. -- uberpenguin 20:20, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
